Pahlmeyer
2008 Red
Napa Valley
The 2008 Proprietary Red Wine blend (essentially a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wine with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec blended in) has a more opaque/purple color. With more graphite, blueberry and lilac notes, sweet tannin, medium to full body, and an elegant, gracious feel, it is more restrained than previous examples but has no shortage of richness and concentration. It looks to be a beauty in a Bordeaux style, with sweet tannins but loads of fruit – unmistakably California but French in structure. Drink it over the next 15+ years. regular $ 109.99

Ladera
2007 Cabernet Sauvignon
Napa Valley
The least expensive effort, and a top value for a Napa Cabernet, is the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa. A dark ruby/plum-colored blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot and Malbec, it offers up notes of plums, cassis and blue fruits, silky tannins, a fleshy, ripe style and not a hard edge to be found. This impressive effort is the type of Cabernet Sauvignon that normally costs 2-3 times the price. Drinkable now, this sleeper of the vintage will age for a decade or more. regular $ 29.99

Trinchero
2008 Cabernet Sauvignon
Central Park West Napa Valley
The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Central Park West (the name is apparently a tribute to the Trinchero family's home town, New York City) comes from a 22-acre vineyard planted in the deep, loamy soils of the valley floor at the southern edge of the St. Helena appellation. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by earthy, Provencal garrigue-like notes intermixed with high quality unsmoked cigar tobacco. This is the softest, easiest to drink, most precocious and evolved of the 2008 single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons. Medium to full-bodied and seductive, it is ideal for drinking over the next 10-15 years. regular $ 39.99

Ladera
2007 Cabernet Sauvignon
Howell Mountain Napa Valley
The most expensive offering is the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain. A classic Howell Mountain wine, it is tannic and backward with blueberry, blackberry and floral notes intermixed with lots of minerality as well as a boatload of tannin. This is a long-term wine so forget it for 3-4 years and drink it over the following two decades. The highly respected Karen Culler is the winemaker for Ladera, who have produced a trifecta of delicious 2007s.

Altamura
2008 Cabernet Sauvignon
Napa Valley
Combines very ripe, spicy dark berry fruit that's even a touch racy, with a firm backbone and a well-structured mix of acidity and tannins. The fruit is potent and concentrated, yet also shows a suppleness and measure of grace. Should only get better. Drink now through 2024.

Vine Cliff Winery
2008 Oakville Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
Napa Valley
Cassis, black currant and sweet black cherry, combine with honeysuckle, tobacco and the spicy nutmeg of the oak. The palate is rich, full and bright, with currant and blackberry leading the way. Hints of dark chocolate and licorice add complexity to the intense black fruits and lead to a long, lingering finish. The very definition of grace and elegance. Winery notes. regular $ 74.99

Beau Vigne
2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Juliet
Napa Valley
(76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc from the parcel they called Juliet's Bench) shows off winemaker Dave Phinney's terrific, sexy, opulent, flamboyant style. Personality-wise, it is more like a 2007 than a 2008. Dense purple to the rim, with glorious notes of graphite and black cherry liqueur intermixed with cassis and blackberry, it possesses a subtle smokiness, a voluptuous texture, and a layered finish that should please both your hedonistic and intellectual senses. It will drink well for 15 or more years.

Hestan Vineyards
2006 Cabernet Sauvignon
Napa Valley
Massive, dramatic, beautiful, intense, but young and firm in tannins, with a cut of fresh acidity. Shows concentrated blackberries, black currants, violets, minerals and cedar, leading to a long, penetrating finish. Very great Cabernet, vibrant and potent, just tremendous in structure. Potentially a near-perfect wine with 4–6 years in the bottle. regular $ 99.99

Quintessa
2008 Red
Napa Valley
Quintessa 2008 opens with fragrant plum and raspberry aromas with notes of cola, clove and white chocolate rounding out a delicate perfume. The wine enters the palate with sweet red currant and plum fruit flavors and a silky mouthfeel. As it coats the mouth, concentrated dark fruit flavors emerge with succulent balanced tannins, a subtle impression of well-integrated oak and sweetness from the rich, ripe fruit. This vintage will gain complexity in the bottle and age gracefully for a decade and more. Winemaker Charles Thomas. regular $ 129.99
