Bevan Cellars 2018 Ontogeny Napa Valley California
Jeb Dunnuck 99 Rating

While this cuvée is one of the least expensive in the lineup, it’s often one of my favorites. The 2018 Ontogeny is no exception and should be snatched up by readers. A classic 2018 nose of ripe, pure blue fruits, cassis, violets, and smoked earth gives way to a full-bodied, dense, concentrated Cabernet with beautiful tannins and length. It’s going to evolve for 20 years or more. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot.

Marciano 2017 Estate M Proprietary Red Napa Valley California
Wine Advocate 95 Rating

This was tasted as a barrel sample. A blend of Bordeaux varieties, the 2017 M by Marciano has a deep garnet-purple color and comes strutting out of the glass with the most gorgeous perfume of lilacs, red roses and baking spices, over a core of warm cassis, blackberry pie and preserved blueberries with wafts of pencil shavings and black loam. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is elegantly crafted with a quiet intensity and compelling tension, textured with beautifully fine-grained tannins, finishing long and fragrant. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Hudson Vineyards 2018 Phoenix Bordeaux Red Blend from Carneros California
Wine Advocate 93 Rating

The 2018 Phoenix is a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc and was aged for 20 months in French oak barrels, 80% new. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the nose is redolent of warm plums, black cherries and black raspberries with suggestions of garrigue, menthol, pencil lead and roses. Medium-bodied, velvety and with great freshness, the palate delivers vibrant, crunchy fruit and a good long, mineral-tinged finish.

Long Shadows 2013 Pirouette Bordeaux Blend Columbia Valley Washington State
Jeb Dunnuck 93 Rating

While a step back from the blockbuster 2012, Philippe Melka’s 2013 Pirouette is no slouch and offers serious amounts of ripe black cherry fruits, graphite, hints of chocolate and plenty of sweet oak in a beautifully concentrated, ripe, textured package. Made from 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 12% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc (mostly from Red Mountain) that spent 22 months in 75% new French oak, give bottle 3-5 years in the cellar and enjoy over the following decade or more.

Orin Swift Cellars 2018 Papillon Napa Valley
Wine Advocate 94 Rating

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Bordeaux Blend Papillon springs from the glass with plum preserves, baked blackcurrants and black mulberries with touches of menthol, tobacco leaf and pencil lead. Full-bodied, the palate has a firm texture of ripe, grainy tannins with a lively line and a long earthy finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc.

Justin 2014 Justification Bordeaux Red Blends Paso Robles California
Wine Spectator 94 Rating

Smooth-textured, graceful and refined, with a tenderness to the texture and tannins. Features a warm, inviting mix of red and dark berry flavors and subtle shades of licorice, light mocha and savory herbs, revealing floral scents and a long, persistent finish that echoes the core essence. This blend is 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot. Drink now through 2035.
