Saxum 2020 James Berry Vineyard White
$199.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Jeb Dunnuck 97-99 Rating
While the 2020 James Berry Vineyard White hasn't been bottled yet, I was nevertheless blown away, and I suspect it will be one of the finest whites to come from the region. Sporting a medium gold hue as well as a full-bodied, deep, rich, concentrated profile, it has a heavenly bouquet of white stone fruits, toasted bread, honeysuckle, and white flowers. You could safely put this awesome wine up against the finest whites coming out of the Rhône Valley today. SP32-3 -

A new wine that comes from a higher elevation site sitting just four miles off the Pacific Coast, the 2021 Cayucos Ridge Vineyard is all Syrah and has a singular style in its white pepper, fennel, game, and ripe blue fruit aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied and concentrated, with good ripeness, it just screams cool-climate California Syrah. SP21-4 -

Saxum 2021 James Berry Vineyard White
$199.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
I like to think that we are getting better and better at making this wine, or maybe our Grenache Blanc vines are producing better and better fruit, or maybe it’s just that ’21 was an exceptional year for whites. Whatever the reasons, I’m really enjoying our one and only white….it is full and rich, yet bright and lively. The magical combo I always look for in a white…actually in any wine really… It’s fresh, lifted and focused like you would expect in a cooler year, but has great concentration and texture from the dry weather. 347 cases produced. Saxum 2022 Cayucos Ridge Vineyard Red
$249.99San Luis Obispo
Jeb Dunnuck 100 Rating
The second vintage from this cool site just beside the Pacific, the 2022 Cayucos Ridge Vineyard is 100% Syrah, fermented with 43% whole clusters and aged 34 months in 68% new French oak (225-liter and 300-liter barrels). Spicy red and black fruits, California bay, pepper, sandalwood, and sage all emerge from this incredibly complete and complex wine. Medium to fullbodied, it’s layered, pure, and seamless, with ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and flawless balance. It’s an absolutely magical, singular wine that tops out my scale. I love it today, yet it should have 15-20 years of prime drinking. SP18-1 -

Saxum 2023 4hearts Vineyard
$199.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Wine Advocate 95 Rating
Typically one of the most distinctive wines in the Saxum portfolio, the 2023 4hearts Vineyard is no exception and is an incredibly sturdy example, fitting as the last vintage of the cuvée. It is composed of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Petite Sirah and 25% Zinfandel made with 25% stem inclusion and a 22-month élevage in 225-liter and 300-liter barrels, half of which are American oak from Canton. The American oak component is prevalent yet harmonious from the outset. A red-fruited, resinous and gourmand nose introduces a dense, compact palate livened by bracing acidity. It finishes on a focused, taut note supported by grainy yet refined tannins that will benefit from a few years in the cellar to integrate. SP22-2 -

Saxum 2023 G2 Vineyard
$199.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Jeb Dunnuck 98 Rating
Based on 72% Grenache, 13% Syrah, 6% Mataro, 5% Graciano, and 4% Carignan, aged 22 months in a mix of amphora and French oak, the 2023 G2 Vineyard boasts a sensational perfume of dark berries, black cherries, scorched earth, graphite, and peppery, floral nuances. It’s full-bodied, with a seamless, textured mouthfeel, ripe yet polished tannins, and that rare mix of richness with elegance. This shows the warmer style of the vintage while staying light on its feet and, oh, so drinkable. I love it today, yet it has at least 15 years of prime drinking ahead of it. Drink 2025-2040. Deep purple-hued, it’s a rich, powerful red with notes of red and black cherries, sappy flowers, juniper, licorice, and exotic spice. A step up over the Rocket Block and one of the finest 2020s out there, the 2020 Hexe is 51% Grenache, 17% Petite Sirah, and the rest Graciano and Mourvèdre, all from a single parcel of old vines in the James Berry Vineyard.
