Castello dei Rampolla 2018 d’Alceo Toscana
$184.99Tuscany Italy
Vinous 99 Rating
The 2018 D’Alceo is a wild, exotic wine. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot come together in a wine that is sumptuous, layered and exceptionally beautiful. Inky blue/purplish fruit, sage, mint, lavender and chocolate are some of the many notes that take shape. The 2018 was fermented in cement then aged 12 months in a combination of 500L tonneaux and barriques. This really blooms with time. Castello dei Rampolla’s Sammarco and D’Alceo have been benchmarks for several decades. Both 2018s will take their place among the best wines ever made here. Maurizia di Napoli and her brother, Luca, craft wines of notable intensity and pedigree. Biodynamic farming and low intervention winemaking are the rule. Of the two flagship wines, D’Alceo is a bit more opulent, likely because the terraced vineyards are south and south-east facing, while Sammarco has a bit more tannic backbone and energy. Both are off the charts great. SP44-6 -
Saxum 2021 James Berry Vineyard White
$199.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
I like to think that we are getting better and better at making this wine, or maybe our Grenache Blanc vines are producing better and better fruit, or maybe it’s just that ’21 was an exceptional year for whites. Whatever the reasons, I’m really enjoying our one and only white….it is full and rich, yet bright and lively. The magical combo I always look for in a white…actually in any wine really… It’s fresh, lifted and focused like you would expect in a cooler year, but has great concentration and texture from the dry weather. 347 cases produced. Chateau Leoville Poyferre 2020 Saint-Julien
$149.99Bordeaux France
Jeb Dunnuck 98 Rating
The Grand Vin 2020 Chateau Leoville Poyferre, which is released in a stylish black bottle commemorating a century for the Cuvelier family, is reminiscent of the 2016 with its powerful, concentrated, yet vibrant and inward style. Pure creme de cassis, melted chocolate, loamy earth, graphite, and some spicy nuances all define the aromatics, and it’s full-bodied, with a stacked mid-palate, nicely integrated oak, ripe tannins, and one hell of a great finish. This is another utterly brilliant wine from this team, which has been producing First Growth quality wines for many years now. The blend of the 2020 is 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, aged in 80% new barrels, hitting 13.58% natural alcohol and a pH of 3.81. Best After 2028. Saxum 2017 Paderewski Vineyard
$199.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Vinous 97 Rating
Powerful, deeply pitched black and blue fruit, candied licorice, violet pastille and fruitcake flavors are braced by a spine of juicy acidity and a hint of smoky minerals. Stains the palate with densely packed cassis, bitter cherry and blueberry flavors that pick up exotic spice, cola and dark chocolate on the back half. This deeply concentrated wine shows remarkable clarity and litheness for its richness and finishes extremely long and spicy, with a resonating floral note and chewy, steadily building tannins. Croix Estate 2021 Floodgate Pinot Noir Middle Reach
$74.99Russian River Valley Sonoma California
Enjoyabilityfactor 93 Rating
This is a classic, Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. Fans of full-bodied, concentrated styles will absolutely love what this wine has to offer. Spicey aromas of cinnamon, cardamom, and anise mingle with dark cherry perfume, cola, sweet smoked tobacco leaf, and toasted vanillin. Compact, extracted, and viscous on the palate, the wine has substantial power and glide featuring dark black cherry, savory caramel, black plum pie, supported with balanced acidity to lift the wine into a harmonious balance of rich and racy.
