Croix Estate 2023 Floodgate Pinot Noir Russian River Valley
Price range: $69.99 through $330.00Sonoma County California
This is a classic, Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. Fans of full-bodied, concentrated styles will absolutely love what this wine has to offer. Spicey aromas of cinnamon, cardamom, and anise mingle with dark cherry perfume, cola, sweet smoked tobacco leaf, and toasted vanillin. Compact, extracted, and viscous on the palate, the wine has substantial power and glide featuring dark black cherry, savory caramel, black plum pie, supported with balanced acidity to lift the wine into a harmonious balance of rich and racy. Look for this delicious Pinot to put on more mid-palate weight over the next three years. This is our second vintage under the caption of “Floodgate” and takes the place of our former blended designate AVA bottling, Narrow Gauge Pinot Noir.

Croix Estate 2023 Zinfandel Moon Mountain District
Price range: $79.99 through $432.00Sonoma County
Sitting at 1300 feet elevation along the western facing slopes of the Mayacamas Mountain Range, the Monte Rosso Vineyard commands significant attention as a historical winegrowing reference point in Sonoma County. The site historically produces wines of high acidity across all varieties due to the volcanic influence and minerality in the homogenous Red Hill Loam soil, the southern facing aspect of the vineyard, and the elevation. This is certainly true of our production Zinfandel from the property. 100% Pellenc Destemmed And Gravity Fed Open Top Fermentation, 5-day cold soak, 100% Carbonic Maceration With Hand Punch-Downs. 100% native yeast primary and secondary fermentations. 75% new French oak for 16 months.

Dark and concentrated in the glass, this bottling immediately reveals an elegantly refined polish. Aromas of blackberry, dark cocoa and black pepper lead into a palate that's concentrated but perfectly ripe. Flavors of black currant, vanilla, toast and a hint of mint are wrapped in complex yet smooth tannins and ample, fresh acidity. SP8-2 -

A dense crème de cassis aroma shows a serious edge of loamy soil, bittersweet cocoa and roasted rib eye on the nose. The palate is wrapped in smooth yet structural tannins, offering charred black currant, black olive and more cocoa, with a sizzle of acidity persistent throughout. R35-2 -

Intensely dark blueberry and cassis aromas are cut by hints of meat and dry oak on the nose of this estate’s entry-level bottling, which includes 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petite Verdot. Chalky, firm tannins frame the fresh blackberry flavors of the sip, where a dusting of pepper spice floats through the long-lingering finish. R2-2 -

What could be considered the second wine of this estate, the 2022 Relevant is based on 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Merlot, aged 18 months in barrels with one-third new French oak. Ripe black fruits, graphite, chocolate, and background oak all emerge from this medium to full-bodied effort. It’s round, mouth-filling, and incredibly satisfying, and while I like it today, particularly with a decant, it should keep for 10-12 years. Drink 2025-2037.

There’s a purity to the nose of this bottling that reveals deep, lush waves of boysenberry paste alongside a savory tone of charred beef. Polished tannins frame the sip, where ample amounts of rich black plum and blackberry are enhanced by caramel, coffee bean and mocha flavors, with acidity holding tight into the finish. SP8-13 -

Dalla Valle 2013 Maya

The flagship wine, and one of the first in Napa Valley to emphasize the fabulous potential of Cabernet Franc in specific terroirs, is the 2013 Maya Proprietary Red Wine. This wine usually spends about 22 months in new oak and normally has anywhere from 45% to as much as 60% Cabernet Franc blended with the estate’s Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2013 could well be the finest they’ve made to date, and that includes a lot of profound wines. An incredibly complex nose of charcoal embers, blackberry and cassis, some blueberries as well as white flowers, and a touch of forest floor is followed by a full-bodied wine with sweet, well-integrated tannins, a multi-dimensional mouthfeel, and a finish that goes on for close to a minute. This is absolutely remarkable wine – powerful, dense, but at the sane time, precise and elegant. It’s hard to believe, but I think this wine can probably age and improve for 25-40 years. Don’t miss it if you have access to it. SP23-1
