True to its signature, the 2022 pours deep, dense ruby. It is just as intense in aroma, dispersing coffee, potting soil, mushroom and black currants. Vigorous and full yet ultimately balanced, the palate boasts a juicy core of toothsome blackberries, and its firm, stony tannins are well polished. Stylised and easy to understand without sacrificing complexity or a certain sense of place, it even evokes a wild dustiness.

Available in a heavy glass bottle, this is now 100% Merlot with fruit from two late-ripening vineyard sites (Valadorna and Capraia). The Tenuta di Arceno 2018 Valadorna is a dense, full-bodied Tuscan wine with hints of rosemary and grilled spice and plenty of velvety softness. This vintage shows extra spiciness for barbecued meat on the grill. This wine started off with only Merlot but became a Bordeaux blend in later years; however, the 2018, 2019 and 2021 vintages are 100% Merlot.

Effe 55 comes from a two-hectare northeast-facing plot at 550 metres above sea level and includes the estate’s oldest vines, which were planted in 1970 to Sangiovese clones from Montalcino. A mellow yet promising nose exhibits red currants laced with stony mineral and seductive truffles. Attractively textured with wood that frames rather than imposes, the tannins are firm and the acidity crisp. Blood orange lingers on the finish. Elegant and understated, this promises to express more with time.
