Lava Cap is regarded as one of the premier Zinfandel producers in the Sierra Foothills. The 2022 Zinfandel reflects Lava Caps’ goal of creating wines that have ample concentrations and depth, but also expectational balance. Rather than the jammy and brambly flavors so often associated with this grape, this wine shows elegance, with vivid red fruits, great acidity, and moderate tannins. All hallmarks of high elevation expressions of these grapes. The wines balance and brightness make it perfect for Tri-Tip, hamburgers, or Italian food. The grapes are handpicked at moderate sugars and fermented in stainless steel. Aged 24 months in François Frères French oak barrels.

The estate red 2016 Reserva comes from a late growing season and was produced with local varieties like Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, and others from their 86 hectares of vineyards at 590 to 805 meters in altitude on limestone, sandstone and marl soils. The grapes were picked late with good ripeness and health and fermented with natural yeasts in stainless steel and open-top oak vats and then matured in oak containers of different sizes for 20 to 21 months. These are more classical wines, with a more evolved nose, with high ripeness and some balsamic and medicinal notes. It has a dusty palate with Nebbiolo-like tannins. 300,000 bottles and 8,200 magnums produced. It was bottled in May 2019.”

This long-running Bordeaux-style blend is a classic, reserve-style wine that’s dense, layered and polished, but also deep and long. Blended from some of Foley group’s best barrels using grapes from all around Sonoma County. Savory, floral and lavender aromas, with graphite, dark chocolate and creme de cassis flavors that expand on the palate and linger on the finish. 73% cabernet sauvignon, plus merlot, cabernet franc, malbec and petit verdot. Sustainable. Drinkable now, but best from 2029.
