    Saint-Damien 2021 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes

    $39.99

    Southern Rhone Valley France
    Vinous 95 Rating
Vivid ruby. A highly fragrant bouquet evokes candied red fruits, smoky minerals and lavender; a spicy nuance builds as the wine opens up. Sappy and penetrating on the palate, juicy raspberry, cherry and floral pastille flavors show good heft, seamless texture and real energy. It finishes spicy and impressively long, with sneaky tannins adding a final grip. This is shaping up to be a highly impressive entry-level bottling, which is not surprising given that this is the only Gigondas that will be bottled this year, so all the juice from the Louisiane and Souteyrades is going into this wine. Get it, lots of it, if you can. Raised in neutral, 50 hectoliter oak foudres. R5-2

Kirsch, candied raspberry and blueberry dominate the nose of this deeply colored blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The palate is a pleasure bomb of berry fruit within a framework of oaky structure. Lively balancing acidity on the finish accompanies the grip of those tannins. Most stores $89.99 R10-4

The 2021 Syrah Forgeron emerges from a block planted in 2000. Rich, deep and layered in the glass, the 2021 is so inviting. Here, too, the stems (100%) are impeccably balanced within the wine’s frame. Readers will find a potent yet delicate Syrah with a good deal of floral and spice notes, but less in the way of savory/peppery impressions.

Made with 8% Carignan and 3% Mourvèdre, the 2020 Syrah Lower East begins with a floral and fresh nose, popping with whole-cluster aromas, spicy florals, crunchy red fruits and a notion of bitter dark chocolate. Medium-bodied, fresh and spicy, the succulent and food-friendly wine will be ready for action when it’s released early next year. Made with 70% whole-cluster fruit, the wine rested for 21 months in neutral French barrels.

Damp earth, dark berry and forest wood aromas show on the nose of this bottling. The palate is very dry and mineral-driven, snapping with tightly wound fruit flavors as well as turned earth, charred meat and purple flower elements, with mint popping on the finish.

Medium ruby-purple in color, the 2019 Zinfandel Giuseppe & Luisa bursts with singular aromas of dried lavender and citrus peel, smoky, mineral-like undertones and loads of exotic spices over a core of wild berry preserves and peaches. It’s incredible in the mouth, its full flavors delivered in a silky, ultra fresh and lifted frame, and it finishes with loads of floral nuance. Wow! 1,653 cases produced.

    Jeb Dunnuck 94 Rating
Deep ruby, the 2021 Pinot Noir Clay Court is layered with floral and spice notes as well as black raspberry liqueur, anise, mossy earth, and cracked pepper. Medium to full-bodied, with an elegant mouthfeel and a beautiful texture, it offers fine tannins and a silky, clean, rounded palate of fruit. Long on the palate and very well-balanced, it’s hard to resist now, but I imagine this will improve over the next 6-8 years. SP8-6
