    Abbazia di Novacella 2024 Kerner

    Price range: $24.99 through $240.00

    Alto Adige Valle Isarco Italy
There’s so much history in this bottle it would drain the ink of 100 pens to write it all down. Besides being one of Italy’s most beautiful wineries, with its backdrop against the Dolomites, it is also one of the oldest (2nd oldest, actually), founded in 1142 by Augustinian monks. Kerner, by contrast, is a regular arriviste, having been created by August Herald only in 1929. A cross between Riesling and the light red grape Schiava, it found a natural home in the cool alpine climate of the Alto Adige. The valleys here were carved by ancient glaciers, so the vineyards are steep, producing fresh, aromatic wines. Like this Kerner, which is layered with ripe apple, white peach, honeysuckle, and almonds. It’s rich, yet invigorating, and incredibly versatile at the table. 100% Kerner from gravelly marine soils planted at 600-750m in elevation. Vinified in stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeasts, then aged 6 months in stainless steel tanks.

Alessandro Mori’s wines are easy to spot in a blind tasting thanks to the soaring intensity and vibrant Sangiovese aromas they display. They are truly one of a kind. A wine that sees a relatively short and hot fermentation, the Il Marroneto 2019 Brunello di Montalcino respects local winemaking tradition and remains true in spirit. The steep verticality of the bouquet evokes almost-carbonic or lifted aromas of bright cherry, strawberry shortcake, lilac and heritage rose. You get straight to the heart of Sangiovese. The tannins are extremely fine and powdery and the freshness of the fruit is beautifully intact. This wine really pops in 2019. Drink: 2025-2048.

The 2021 SLV is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 21 months, in 100% new French oak. It’s a concentrated, opulent vintage of this wine. Bright nose of violets, blackberry and blueberry compote. Full-bodied with plush velvet tannins that are ripe, powerful and super granular. An undercurrent of huckleberry fruit mingles with graphite minerality. Natural acidity is present and juicy. The long finish is bright and floral and resolves with more ripe black fruit, salted dark chocolate, and toasty oak.

Camphor, cedar, cassis and blackberries all appear on the nose of the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, a massively concentrated yet vibrant offering. It’s full-bodied and intense, velvety and rich, but it shows ample energy and thrust on the finish. If there’s a complaint, it’s that it’s too monolithic, but I’d chalk that up to its youth at this stage and expect it to gain complexity as it ages for two decades or more. R37-3

    Wine Advocate 98 Rating
The 2021 Chardonnay Isobel Charles Heintz Vineyard is the 20th bottling of a Heintz Vineyard Chardonnay at DuMOL. It was harvested September 25-27, matured in larger barrels and finished with six months in stainless steel. “There are very few better vintages of this,” winemaker Andy Smith exclaims during our tasting, and I have to agree. It’s bursting with scents of matchstick, chamomile, Greek yogurt and white peach, and over time, it unfurls unique spicy, herbal undertones. The palate is intensely concentrated, boasting expansive, dynamic flavors that segue from stone fruit to honey. Satiny and seamless, it has a tremendously long finish with mind-altering depth of flavor. Fans of Burgundy will love it for its flinty tones, and fans of California for its concentration and power.
