I was able to taste the 2017 James Berry Vineyard beside the perfect 2016 and there’s not much difference between these two sensational wines. The 2017 reveals a deep ruby color as well as more straight, focused, yet beautifully concentrated style that reveals gorgeous black raspberry and blackberry fruits interwoven with pepper, spring flowers, earth, and incense. One of the best kept secrets in Pomerol is the quality of the wines from Jeremy Chasseuil’s tiny estate located between Trotanoy and Latour à Pomerol, just across the street from the Clinet sector. Coming from a 6.32-hectare parcel and a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Chateau Feytit-Clinet sports a dense purple hue to go with blockbuster aromatics of ripe black cherries, cassis, chocolaty oak, leafy herbs, and damp earth. Full-bodied and concentrated, with remarkable purity and ultra-fine tannins, this utterly brilliant Pomerol will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and will evolve for 20-25 years or more if well-stored. The 2020 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a total stunner. For the first time I can remember, Les Carmes Haut-Brion marries all of its elements so well that nothing stands out. In the past, the high percentage of Franc and/or the whole clusters were evident. The 2020 is the first modern vintage in which all the elements are so well balanced. Dark red/purplish fruit, rose petal, mint, lavender, dried herbs and incense all build in a ravishing Pessac-Léognan that will take your breath away. The 2020 is 40% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Merlot, picked between September 14 to 26, which is early here. Whole cluster was 55%. Vinification took place over five weeks, using very gentle extraction, with no pumpovers or punchdowns. Aging was 80% new oak, 11% 18hL foudres and 9% amphorae. In tasting, the 2020 is simply magnificent. There are no soloists, just the most exceptionally vivid, breathtaking orchestra imaginable. The 2020 is a masterpiece from Technical Director Guillaume Pouthier and his team. Don’t miss it! SP56-4 -

The 2020 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a more fleshy, textured Pauillac that still plays in the concentrated, focused, structured style of the vintage. Ripe black cherries, currants, toasty oak, chocolate, and tobacco leaf notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, richly textured 2020 that has velvety tannins, good mid-palate depth, and a great finish. Do your best to hide bottles for 4-5 years and enjoy over the following 20-25 years or so. SPBX-6 -

The 2020 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Demi-Sec is clear, pure, subtle, deep and fresh, with highly refined chalky/sandy lemon aromas. Rich and intense yet silky textured and refined on the concentrated palate, this is a juicy, highly elegant, perfectly balanced, persistently salty and mouth-salivating Haut-Lieu with very fine tannins and a long, firm and pretty powerful but elegant and complex finish. Still more stringent than the Le Mont Demi-Sec in the beginning, but after aeration, this is not just a greatly finessed Chenin but one of the finest Haut-Lieu’s I have tasted from Huet. BX-4 R8-8 -

Grenache is picked slightly overripe, and only ferments briefly with whole bunches before alcohol is added, thereby stopping fermentation while there is still a considerable amount of residual sugar in the wine. The wine then macerates for another approx. 6 weeks before pressing. The palette is round and soft, without becoming alcohol-heavy. Here are lots of both red and black berries, and a nice little seasoning at the end.

Both flinty reduction and rose notes play on the nose. The palate comes in with concentration and a pithy, phenolic texture that lends structure and backbone to this rich, rounded, almost oily but dry wine. Pleasant citrus-pith bitterness sits well with the bold, warm but dry generosity. It’s best to let this come into its own. Drink 2025–2035.
