Description

1-Di Sipio 2023 Pecorino Terre di Chieti Abruzzo Italy
Enjoyabilityfactor 91 Rating

The pecorino is a light golden yellow. On the nose, aromas of ripe peach, mirabelle, exotic notes of mango, citrus and banana and almost perfumed notes of wild rose petals delight. On the palate, the wine is extremely fruity, spicy and full-bodied with a juicy and straightforward acid structure. The long finish is carried by a salty minerality and spicy-fruity aromas. A wonderfully harmonious white wine that is already enormously fun to drink at a young age but also has a storage potential of 5-10 years.

2-Abbazia di Novacella 2024 Kerner Alto Adige Valle Isarco Italy
There’s so much history in this bottle it would drain the ink of 100 pens to write it all down. Besides being one of Italy’s most beautiful wineries, with its backdrop against the Dolomites, it is also one of the oldest (2nd oldest, actually), founded in 1142 by Augustinian monks. Kerner, by contrast, is a regular arriviste, having been created by August Herald only in 1929. A cross between Riesling and the light red grape Schiava, it found a natural home in the cool alpine climate of the Alto Adige. The valleys here were carved by ancient glaciers, so the vineyards are steep, producing fresh, aromatic wines. Like this Kerner, which is layered with ripe apple, white peach, honeysuckle, and almonds. It’s rich, yet invigorating, and incredibly versatile at the table. 100% Kerner from gravelly marine soils planted at 600-750m in elevation. Vinified in stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeasts, then aged 6 months in stainless steel tanks.

3-Giovanni Viberti 2021 Barbera d’Alba La Gemella Piedmont Italy
Wine Spectator 91 Rating

This is dark and rich, yet fluid, offering blackberry, boysenberry, plum and violet flavors. Supple and harmonious, leaving a mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2028.

4-Produttori del Barbaresco 2020 Barbaresco Piedmont Italy
Wine Advocate 95 Rating

The 2020 Barbaresco boasts an ample set of aromas with wild cherry, blue flower, sweet spice and crushed limestone. As always, the wine paints an exciting and authentic portrait of Nebbiolo, albeit with a little more richness and texture in this vintage. This is especially true in terms of the palate, where the wine offers mid-weight intensity with melting tannins.

5-Poggio Antico 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Tuscany Italy
Jeb Dunnuck 93 Rating

A bright red color, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino is floral and aromatic of preserved strawberries, baby powder, and herbes de Provence. Medium-bodied, it has refined ripe tannins, even acidity, and a clean, stony textured finish. A lovely and charming wine, it’s drinking well now and will drink well over the coming 8-10 years.

6-Mazzei 2016 Fonterutoli Concerto Tuscany Italy
Vinous 95 Rating

The 2016 Concerto di Fonterutoli, the estate’s blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, is dense, plush and explosive, with superb depth and notable persistence. Super-ripe black cherry, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and rose petal build in a rich, dramatic wine endowed with superb depth, intensity and pedigree. All the best elements of the house style are on display in this sumptuous, modern Tuscan red. Two thousand sixteen is a terrific vintage for the Concerto. I loved it.
