Silky and exuding violet, blackberry and black currant, this red is about as alluring as a young Burgundy gets. It firms up on the finish with refined, cocoa powder tannins. Vibrant and long too. Drink now through 2028. SP4-12

Bouchard owns over two hectares of this climat, and the 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Les Teurons was the first parcel of Pinot Noir harvested in this vintage. Mingling aromas of sweet berries and cassis with hints of peonies, raw cocoa and loamy soil, it’s medium-bodied, velvety and enveloping, with bright acids and a nicely defined finish. This is another of the portfolio’s sleepers.

Intensely nutty aroma from the get go, but with aeration candied-lemon notes develop. Just a hint of vanilla from oak. The serious structure gives it a compact core, with plenty of citrusy fruit wrapped around this. Very impressive length and stony drive at the finish for a village wine. So vibrant you have to go back for more. From a 8.64 hectare, high-altitude plot in Meursault. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. R2-7

Bursting with aromas of raspberries, sweet spices and deep soil tones, the 2021 Beaune 1er Cru du Château is medium-bodied, ample and charming, with lively acids, melting tannins and a saline finish. This high-quality, comparatively accessible bottling is always reliable, though I confess I’d love to see some of the great parcels that go into it as standalone cuvées.

The nose of this very beautiful Corton-Charlemagne transports me to an Alpine meadow, when all the wild flowers are blossoming. I love the restrained, citrusy richness that is effortlessly interwoven with the stony minerality on the medium- to full-bodied palate of this graceful, yet highly-structured wine. Still quite tight at the very salty finish, but so much to give. From a 3.65 hectare plot at the very top of the hill of Corton, directly below the forest with a yellow mark soil. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

Very aromatic nose with fruit and floral notes. Just as perfumed on the palate, this wine expresses its richness and fullness without the slightest heaviness. Good ageing potential. Pair with poultry and fish in cream sauce.

On the nose, it presents an abundant perfume of black currant and Bing cherry, enhanced by lilac, wild spices, and wet slate. The palate reveals a deep, structured wine with mouthwatering layers of black cherry, vanilla, cassis, and oak. Its complexity makes it an ideal pairing for hearty dishes like grilled ribeye, lamb shank, or rich mushroom risotto. The wine’s depth and elegance also complement strong cheeses like aged cheddar or blue cheese, offering a memorable tasting experience.

    Bordeaux France
    Wine Advocate 95 Rating
The 2019 Branaire-Ducru unwinds in the glass with aromas of raspberries, blackcurrants, sweet soil tones and hints of cigar wrapper, rose petals and cedar. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's youthfully tightly wound, with terrific concentration, tangy acids, powdery tannins and a long, saline finish. While this is a little reserved out of the gates, its energy and classical proportions will richly reward bottle age. SP56-4

Camphor, cedar, cassis and blackberries all appear on the nose of the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, a massively concentrated yet vibrant offering. It’s full-bodied and intense, velvety and rich, but it shows ample energy and thrust on the finish. If there’s a complaint, it’s that it’s too monolithic, but I’d chalk that up to its youth at this stage and expect it to gain complexity as it ages for two decades or more. R37-3
