Pouring a dark but transparent red, the 2019 Pinot Noir Chenoweth Ranch is layered with aromas of sweet spices of cardamom, kirsch, and pressed roses. Elegant ripe fruit fills the palate, followed by a clean, silky texture, fine tannins, and balanced fresh acidity. Ripe with wild raspberry, baking spice, and fresh flowers, it’s long on the finish and has a graceful feel. This is a fantastic and classic wine with wonderful purity. Drink 2023-2033.

It is medium-full bodied wine with ripe cherry and red rose petals and a background of spice from the barrel aging. The balance between the boldness of the clone and the coyness of the varietal make for an enticing wine.

Leading off the Chardonnay from Paul Hobbs, the 2019 Chardonnay Russian River Valley reveals a light gold hue as well as a classic, cleanly perfumed bouquet of honeyed citrus, crushed stone, white flowers, and brioche, with just a hint of toasted almond emerging with time in the glass. Medium-bodied, fresh, and lively on the palate, it gains more and more minerality as it sits in the glass. It’s flawlessly balanced, with an incredible mix of rich, ripe fruit and racy, bright acidity as well as outstanding length. This white is well worth searching out, and I would rank it with one of the top, base appellation blends in the vintage. R21-6 -

The 2016 Barolo Le Coste di Monforte is gorgeous. Dried herbs, crushed flowers, mint, licorice, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco give the 2016 striking aromatic nuance to match its mid-weight personality. There is a sense of translucence in the 2016 that is just compelling. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2016 has a ton of richness that emerges over time. The Le Coste spent 25 months in 40HL cask. I loved it. R2-2
