  • Guado al Tasso 2023 iL Bruciato

The 2023 Il Bruciato boasts a dark purple hue and exudes baked aromas of plum, pie spice, balsamic, and rich earth. Full-bodied, the palate is generous and rounded, with supple ripe tannins providing a fleshy sensation through the finish. I would prefer to enjoy this while it retains some freshness over the near term. This vintage is a blend of 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Cabernet Franc, 19% Merlot, and the remainder Syrah and Petit Verdot.

Made from 100% Viognier, the 2016 IGP Collines Rhodaniennes La Combe Pilate is a ripe, unctuous beauty that boasts a huge nose of ripe peach, orange blossom, and honeysuckle. Rich, medium to full-bodied and textured, it's a mini (maybe not so mini) Condrieu. SWS R25-1

The 2015 Maremma Toscana Le Sughere di Frassinello is a great value blend of 50% Sangioveto, 25% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon (aged in French oak for one year). This wine boasts a proven track record for its consistent value and accessibility and can be counted on for both. It releases a steady flow of dark fruit and spice aromas that build in momentum. The mouthfeel is generous and softly velvety in texture, especially in this warm vintage. SWS

The 2022 Siduri Willamette Valley Pinot Noir comes from vineyards in two distinctive appellations within the Willamette Valley: Yamhill-Carlton and Eola-Amity. The contrasts of marine sedimentary and volcanic soils weaver together to create a wine that shows red and black fruits, clove, dried herbs and savory spices.

A creamy, round-textured white with cooked-apple and some ripe-peach character. Some melon, too. It’s full-bodied with layers of fruit and a soft, fruity finish. Drink now.

The 2015 vintage was a wonderfully long and balanced growing season, with an early budbreak at the end of February and slow ripening through August and into September. We picked our Chardonnay by hand, at dawn. The grapes were whole-cluster pressed and the juice fermented in 20% new French and American barrels, then aged 20 months in oak. The 2015 has a lightly green-tinted yellow-gold color, with white-rose floral notes. It is medium bodied, with notes of mellow tar and matchstick on the attack, then tart green apple, fresh pineapple, and a touch of buttery burnt caramel. A very pretty wine. AS

  • Delas Freres 2013 St Joseph Cuvee Francois de Tournon

Similar to the Saint Epine release quality-wise, the 2013 St Joseph Cuvee Francois de Tournon offers more richness, breadth and layer compared to the tighter, more focused, granite-influenced Saint Epine. Plum, black raspberry, licorice, cracked pepper and graphite flows to a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, structured 2013 that needs 3-4 years of cellaring; it will have two decades of longevity. Coming mostly from vineyards around Tournon and Mauves, it spent 12 months in 30% new French oak. R22-2

This straightforward red has subdued aromas recalling dark-skinned fruit and leather. On the lean palate, drying tannins accompany suggestions of dried cherry, powdered sage and a hint of rusty nail. Drink sooner rather than later.

Coming from two sites in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, which is a small AVA in the northern portion of the Willamette Valley, and fermented with 38% stems, the 2017 Pinot Noir Yamhill-Carlton has a terrific bouquet of smoked black cherries, earth, and some spice. It's medium-bodied, rounded, nicely textured, beautifully balanced, and well made.
