    Moving to the two Chardonnays, the 2018 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard Block UU sports a light gold color as well as a pure, crystalline bouquet of honeyed apple, pineapple, citrus blossom, spice, and white flower. It has a kiss of background oak, but it’s beautifully integrated, and the fruit is front and center. With good acidity, a balanced, layered texture, and a great finish, it’s already drinking nicely yet should keep for 7-8 years, if you’re so inclined.

    The 2020 Gran Enemigo Gualtallary Single Vineyard is nothing but phenomenal. It’s very fresh and balanced and, for a warm year like 2020, doesn’t show any heat or excess; it’s subtle and has an ethereal character within the powerful and exuberant character from Gualtallary. It fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts and some full clusters, sometimes up to 70% of the volume. It’s intense and powerful, but something makes if feel light on its feet and with great inner power. This is still young and should develop nicely in bottle and for a long time.

    The 2016 Solanera is up with the finest vintages I’ve tasted of this cuvée (and I’ve had most of them). A blend of 65% Monastrell, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Grenache, all from more limestone and higher elevation soils (and the Monastrell vines are 70 years old), it reveals a saturated purple color as well as full-bodied notes of blue fruits, cedarwood, spiced cherries, and peppery herbs. It’s deep, rich, and textured, yet also balanced and beautifully pure. It’s a steal at the price.

    Tasted after the other 2015s in this range, the Quartet, Arietta's entry-level offering, does not show a demonstrably significant drop in quality, which is probably the highest compliment I can pay it.
