A more Syrah-dominated release, the 2021 Dirt Worshipper is textbook Syrah magic with is peppery, gamey dark fruits, iron, tapenade, sandalwood, and violet-laced aromas and flavors. It’s rich, medium to full-bodied, has a concentrated, layered mouthfeel, and a great finish. Based on 88% Syrah, 7% Petit Verdot, 4% Graciano, and 1% Viognier that was fermented with 40% whole clusters and aged 20 months in 25% new French and Hungarian oak, it will probably merit a triple-digit rating in 4-5 years, and I’d be happy to put this up with the best Syrah’s out there. Coming from Sonoma and based on 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and smaller amounts of Petit Verdot, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Details is a smoking bottle of wine, as well as an incredible value. Darker berries, currants, scorched earth, lead pencil, and hints of chocolate all define the aromatics, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a plush, layered mouthfeel, velvety tannins, and a great finish. It’s from Sonoma but will stand toe to toe with any number of Napa Cabernet Sauvignons that run two to three times the price.

  • Devil Proof 2021 Cima Ladera Red Blend Farrow Ranch

Devil Proof 2021 Cima Ladera Red Blend Farrow Ranch

    $249.99

    Alexander Valley Sonoma County California
    Wine Advocate 98 Rating
The 2021 Farrow Ranch Cima Ladera is a brand-new wine from Devil Proof. It comes from vines planted in 1989 at Farrow Ranch in Alexander Valley, which winemaker Jesse Katz acquired in 2021. “I’ve been trying to get into this vineyard block for years,” he exclaims. “I had to purchase the vineyard to get it!” It’s a blend of 65% Malbec and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and was matured for 22 months in 90% new French oak. It has ringing scents of maraschino cherries and blueberries with accents of bitter chocolate, spearmint, vanilla, lilac and aniseed, offering up new nuances with each return to the glass. The full-bodied palate is lovely! It balances tremendously concentrated flavors with bright acidity and velvety tannins, and it has a very long finish with a fan of spicy accents. This is fantastically expressive and so singular! Only 580 cases were made. SP29-3

    Santa Barbara County California
    Jeb Dunnuck 94 Rating
Based on 100% Chardonnay and aged six months in stainless steel vats, the 2024 Chardonnay has a medium to light gold hue and offers exotic citrus, minty herbs, and subtle tropical flower notes that all define this clean, crisp, remarkably pure Chardonnay. It puts on weight and richness with time in the glass and is a terrific mix of both richness and freshness. This is a no-brainer purchase for those who love Santa Barbara County Chardonnay, and I love its purity.

    Santa Rita Hills California
    Vinous 97 Rating
The 2021 Pinot Noir Sanford and Benedict Vineyard The Twelve Rows is seriously impressive. A wine of stature and pedigree, the 2021 exudes depth in its dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and mocha. The Twelve Rows is sourced from the far eastern portion of Block 6. It sees a bit more stem inclusion in vinification, longer aging with no SO2 and more time in wood than the Sanford Pinots. All this marvelous, complex Pinot needs is time.

Located south of Monterey, the Santa Lucia Highlands is a great AVA that produces an amazing amount of outstanding Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrahs. Starting with the appellation 2018 Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands, it comes all from the Soberanes Vineyard (in the relative center/southern end of the appellation) and spent 15 months in 47% new French oak. This beautiful, elegant, complex wine displays the fruit-loaded style of the appellation yet stays balanced, nicely textured, and even elegant. Black cherries, black raspberries, leafy herbs, a touch of flowers, and some earthy/forest floor notes all emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with a soft, supple texture, again, terrific balance, and a great finish. It's slightly less expensive than the single vineyard, but I think it’s just as good. SP1-2

  • Domaine Drouhin 2023 Arthur Chardonnay

    Domaine Drouhin 2023 Arthur Chardonnay

    Price range: $43.99 through $222.00

    Dundee Hills Oregon
Chardonnay Arthur opens to a classic bouquet of white flowers, Anjou pear, and golden apple. The palate is nuanced and balanced, with a sense of minerality and honeyed lemon zest. Small berries and strict selection at harvest resulted in the intensity of flavors on display. Arthur combines strength and finesse, has nice acidity, and features a medium-long finish that will likely expand as the wine ages over the next 7-10 years.

A deep, serious and structured wine that’s quietly powerful and age-worthy at a reasonable price. Tightly woven tannins, black fruit, bracing acidity and an elegant mouthfeel. Reserved in a good way, it is drinkable now but best from 2028.
