Palmaz Vineyards 2019 Chardonnay Amalia Napa Valley
$59.99California
The 2019 vintage of Amalia Chardonnay is the epitome of summer. Hints of honeysuckle and kiwi rise from the glass as you swirl. Unlike its namesake, the Amalia Chardonnay is shy at first. But soon it becomes synonymous with the Palmaz matriarch, warm and inviting. Meyer lemon rind and hints of tropical banana balance seamlessly with a full-bodied mouthfeel and well-integrated oak. Will do lovely with age, but don’t fret if you open a bottle now, the wine would be a perfect finishing touch to any summer gathering. R13-1 -

Vinous 90 Rating
The 2022 Pinot Noir Reserve is vividly fruit-focused with a burst of crushed raspberries, lavender and peppery rose. Silky and sleek, this mixes tart red berries with hints of spicy citrus carried over a core of zesty acidity. This tapers off with steely minerality and palpable with silty tannins that add a pleasantly tactile feel.

This deep and delicious “regular” bottling from Patz & Hall is fragrant in black cherries, pine needles and ground cloves before blackberries, black tea and hints of cinnamon and cedar play across the palate. At once full-bodied and well-balanced, the wine offers abundant fruits and spices on a moderately tannic texture. Best through 2030.

Produced from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and sporting a deep garnet-purple color, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr Crane Vineyard offers up a profound and singular nose of loam, rocks and iron ore over a core of black cherries, baked black berries and preserved plums with hints of licorice, dark chocolate, cedar, sautéed herbs and beef broth. Full-bodied, rich and demonstrating great depth with a wonderfully compelling personality, it delivers a multitude of savory meat and toast layers, framed by firm, fine-grained tannins. Paul Hobbs 2018 Ross Station Estate Chardonnay
$89.99Russian River Valley California
Jeb Dunnuck 96 Rating
Loads of caramelized peach, toasted spices, brioche, and honeyed citrus emerge from the 2018 Chardonnay Ross Station Estate, one of the richer, more powerful Chardonnay in the lineup. Nevertheless, it has beautiful acidity, flawless balanced, and a great finish. Brought up in 50% new French oak, it’s drinking spot on today and shows the vintage nicely. It will also age well for 4-6 years, probably longer, but there’s no need to delay gratification. R17-5 -

Paul Hobbs 2019 Chardonnay Russian River Valley
$59.99Sonoma County California
Jeb Dunnuck 94 Rating
Leading off the Chardonnay from Paul Hobbs, the 2019 Chardonnay Russian River Valley reveals a light gold hue as well as a classic, cleanly perfumed bouquet of honeyed citrus, crushed stone, white flowers, and brioche, with just a hint of toasted almond emerging with time in the glass. Medium-bodied, fresh, and lively on the palate, it gains more and more minerality as it sits in the glass. It’s flawlessly balanced, with an incredible mix of rich, ripe fruit and racy, bright acidity as well as outstanding length. This white is well worth searching out, and I would rank it with one of the top, base appellation blends in the vintage. R21-6 -

Paul Hobbs 2019 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley
$69.99Sonoma County California
Jeb Dunnuck 94 Rating
Moving to the reds, the 2019 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley offers a medium ruby/purple hue to go with a beautiful perfume of mulberries, black cherries, Asian spices, and roasted herbs. Playing in the medium-bodied end of the spectrum, it still brings plenty of fruit, with a great mid-palate and outstanding length on the finish. It’s common in 2019 for the Russian River Valley Pinots to show a beautiful sense of freshness and elegance, and this wine delivers those qualities in spades. It can be drunk any time over the coming 7-8 years. R46-3 -

Paul Hobbs 2021 Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon
Price range: $119.99 through $660.00Napa Valley California
The Tasting Panel 98 Rating
With an attention- getting purple-black hue, this astound- ing red is silky but manages to eke out teeth-grabbing, dusty black-tea tannins. A host of flavors, among them graphite, black raspberry, violets, and Worces- tershire, sends a message of intensity. Earth and soil notes are apparent, sur- rounding a mineral component within the wine’s deep core.
