Dark cherry with scarlet red highlights. Complex aromas of black raspberry, milk chocolate, and soft hints of sweet cedar. Bold flavors of boysenberry pie, sugar cookie, and toffee lead to subtle notes of strawberry jam and baking spice. The balanced and complex tannin structure creates a long-lasting enjoyable finish. Pairs well with tri-tip crostini, pork ribs with mashed potatoes, or pasta with a bolognese sauce.

This is a winemaker’s master class in blending and understanding of a long-standing site. Dried herb, cedar and pencil shavings accent lifted red fruit and brilliant acidity on the palate, with a supple yet still youthfully grippy texture that is framed by structured, graceful tannins. Enjoy from 2029–2039. R27-2

    Quintessa 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon

    Price range: $269.99 through $1,350.00

    Napa Valley California
    Decanter 96 Rating
Easily one of the most approachable Quintessa wines upon release, this vintage features the suave, plush tannins so characteristic of the estate, wrapped around charming red-fruited and purple floral notes, cedarwood spice, and graphite intensity. These elements frame the aromatics and palate expression, further nuanced by spearmint and mocha through the full-bodied finish. The fruit feels especially juicy and ripe, seemingly more so due to the ease with which the tannins glide across the palate. What a gift for collectors of this wine, which is often more tannic and reticent during even-keeled, picture-perfect growing seasons like 2021, 2016, and 2013. Since tasting it from barrel, the wine has softened significantly, and I now believe it may not age as long as initially anticipated. For the vintage, however, it’s a fantastic wine to enjoy now and regularly over the next 5 to 10 years. Harvested between 9 September and 1 October. A blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Carménère, 1% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. Aged 22 months in 60% new French oak and 1% in terracotta amphora.

Shows nicely coiled energy, with a core of black cherry, mulberry and plum fruit allied to racy acidity, which carries through on the iris- and anise-tinged finish. A subtle, smoldering earth accent hangs in the background, leaving a flinty echo. Drink now through 2033. 1,165 cases made. SP4-6

The wine opens to opulent aromas of rose petals, wild strawberry, savory herbs and the edge of a coastal forest nearing a springtime meadow. This is followed by red cherry, raspberry plum, blood orange marmalade, rose petals and thyme. Layers of coastal forest floor with mushroom laced foliage, rosemary, sea moss and ripe cherries add a unique depth and earthy character, while a vibrant core of red and black berries carry through the palate. The finish is lifted by spice and coastal freshness, leaving a long and youthful impression. R14-6

Sourced entirely from Charles Ranch and pouring a pale straw color, the 2021 Chardonnay Fort Ross-Seaview is fresh and lifted with aromas of salted lime, sea spray, agave, and green pineapple. On the palate. this medium-bodied white is spritely with notes of crunchy fresh fruit and has a silky soft, stony texture to round out its linear drive. This so-called ‘entry-level’ Willamette Valley bottling is absolutely stellar. Pretty aromatics of Moroccan spices, pine bough and deep notes of forest floor. On the palate, an elegance and finesse. Wonderful red fruits chopped mint leaves and lively blue fruit character. Forest-driven umami and a wonderfully integrated, supple mouthfeel through the finish.
