Enjoyabilityfactor 95 Rating
Powerfully aromatic and expressive, this wine opens with scents of concentrated, sweet cassis, anise, blackberries, roasted coffee, blue herbs and barrel vanillin. On the palate, we find firm tannins that deliver grip and peak curiosity, with all pockets of the mouth left yearning for another sip. Full-bodied and extracted with ripe black fruit, blueberries, caramel and a delightful hint of fresh, blue herbs that concentrate into a substantial finish. This wine is approachable upon release and cellar worthy in proper aging conditions. Simply put, Venge’s finest Silencieux to date. regular $69.99

The 2012 Le Desir (64% Cabernet Franc, 24% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Malbec) reminds me of a young vintage of Ausone, such as 2005. The wine has amazing minerality and an explosive blueberry nose intermixed with blackberries, new saddle leather, charcoal and camphor. It is full-bodied, with espresso notes emerging on the palate. There are 1,900 cases of this super-endowed, prodigious wine that should drink well for 35-40 years. How fun it would be for mega-millionaires to put this in a blind tasting of a great vintage of Ausone in 10, 20 or 30 years from now. Drink: 2015-2055. SP22-1 -

Vermillion by Keplinger 2022 Red Blend
$29.99 – $300.00California
The Vermillion Red shows pure blackberry, raspberry, and huckleberry and a finish laced with dried savory herbs, oolong tea, and rosemary. Incredibly generous on the palate, the wine has staying power without being overdone whatsoever. Well integrated oak here, which is impressive given the 16 months of elevage. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Villa Creek 2021 Rocks & Flowers Rhone Blend
$39.99 – $210.00Paso Robles California
Vinous 93 Rating
The 2021 Rocks & Flowers wafts up with a Grenache-driven bouquet with wild strawberries, sweet florals and spice. Round and juicy in character, this impresses with a reverberation of zesty acidity that adds wild energy as ripe raspberry fruits cascade throughout. It finishes crisp and fresh, only gently tannic, while calling the taster back to the glass. 61% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 10% Carnigan, 10% Mourvèdre & 2% Petit Sirah. BX-6

Sporting a saturated purple color, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon VHR is a total blockbuster that spent 21 months in French oak. It knocks it out of the park with its Pauillac-like bouquet of blackcurrants, tobacco leaf, damp earth, lead pencil shavings, and cedarwood. Hitting the palate with a massive texture and full body, it’s a powerful, full throttle effort that has remarkable balance, ripe tannins, and an opulent, sexy texture that’s a joy to drink. Despite its flamboyant style, it’s perfectly balanced and is a sensational wine. Feel free to drink it any time over the coming 20-25 years. Bravo! SPBX-3 -

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon rolls out of the glass with expressive scents of freshly crushed black cherries, warm cassis, and juicy blackberries followed by hints of menthol, dark chocolate, licorice, and cinnamon stick plus a fragrant waft of violets. The full-bodied palate is densely laden with vibrant black fruits and loads of baking spice sparks, framed by exquisitely ripe tannins and well-knit freshness, finishing very long and achingly perfumy. 946 cases were made. The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Cru Napa Valley spent 18 months in 65% new barrels, with the rest in once-used oak. Cassis, blueberries, tobacco, and smoky oak notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated, textured 2021 with ripe yet firmer tannins, a terrific sense of freshness and purity, and outstanding balance. This classic, impeccably made Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is well worth seeking out and will evolve for 15+ years. BX-6

Vineyard 29 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 Aida Vineyard

On the valley floor, with an almost Châteauneuf du Pape layer of small stones, is the Aida Estate, one of my favorite vineyards just north of St. Helena. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Aida Estate is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc aged 20 months in three-fourths new French oak. The good news is that there are 800 cases of this magnificent wine, with a somewhat Graves-like scorched-earth, charcoal, burning ember-scented nose, with notes of hot earth, blackberry and cassis fruit. Big, full-bodied, exuberant and rich, this thick, unctuously textured, purple wine should drink beautifully for 25-30 or more years. SP30-10
