Cafaggio 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva
$24.99 – $120.00Tuscany Italy
Decanter Magazine 93 Rating
Boasting six centuries of grape growing, the Cafaggio estate has passed through numerous ownerships. The latest, as of 2016, is Italian financial company, ISA, who have kept on renowned enologist Attilio Pagli who has been consulting here since 2005. Recent tastings confirm the positive direction, including this 2019 Riserva. It is so classically Panzano, with deep cherry, earthy forest undergrowth and sunbaked stone. The structure is confidently commanding yet balanced, the restrained wood well integrated. Full yet refreshing, this won’t last long at the dinner table.

I Greppi 2020 Greppicaia Bolgheri Superiore
$69.99 – $360.00Tuscany Italy
Wine Spectator 95 Rating
The Greppicaia Bolgheri Superiore is a blend of barrique-aged Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Cabernet Franc (20%) and Merlot (20%). Full of plum, blackberry and black currant flavors, this succulent red is balanced and supple in texture. Leather, earth and tobacco flavors add depth as this stays long and bright on the finish. This is as much about the vivid acidity as tannins for structure. Best from 2025 through 2040.

Very precisely polished and focused wine with aromas of black cherries, blue berries and violets followed by green bell pepper, black ink and gravel. Underlying umami notes, too. Full-bodied, firm yet finely grained juicy tannins with bright acidity that balances out the palate. Beautifully integrated toasty notes and baking spices on the mid-palate and in the finish. Flourishing and artful wine that will age gracefully. Try after 2027. SP21-4 -

Effusive aromas of black figs, toasted oak, espresso beans and turned earth lead to dense, layered flavors of blackberries, wood smoke, black pepper and star anise. This is a fascinating, complex and rather tannic wine that’s sure to keep improving with time. Best 2027–2037. SP12-6 -
Gassier Rose 2024 Rose
$19.99 – $96.00Cotes de Provence France
Enjoyabilityfactor 91 Rating
A blend of Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah and Vermentino. The grapes were harvested at night, ensuring a cool temperature and limiting the risk of oxidation. This was followed by direct, slow and gentle pressing, reducing contact between the skins and the juice to preserve the freshness and lightness of the fruit, while avoiding excessive coloring of the juice. The juice was carefully fermented at a low temperature to preserve its fresh, delicate aromas. The palate opens with fresh flavors of strawberry, açaí and papaya, with a kiss of vanilla and a touch of peppery spice on the long, juicy, chalky mineral finish.

Saint-Damien 2021 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes
$39.99Southern Rhone Valley France
Vinous 95 Rating
Vivid ruby. A highly fragrant bouquet evokes candied red fruits, smoky minerals and lavender; a spicy nuance builds as the wine opens up. Sappy and penetrating on the palate, juicy raspberry, cherry and floral pastille flavors show good heft, seamless texture and real energy. It finishes spicy and impressively long, with sneaky tannins adding a final grip. This is shaping up to be a highly impressive entry-level bottling, which is not surprising given that this is the only Gigondas that will be bottled this year, so all the juice from the Louisiane and Souteyrades is going into this wine. Get it, lots of it, if you can. Raised in neutral, 50 hectoliter oak foudres. R5-2
