Another brilliant wine in the lineup, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard comes from one of the Grand Cru vineyards in the Valley and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Its dense purple color is followed by classic, blockbuster To Kalon notes of blueberries, cassis, raspberries, flowery incense, unsmoked tobacco, and violets. This powerhouse of a Cabernet is full-bodied, has loads of ripe tannins, a layered mouthfeel, and a great finish. This vineyard performed exceptionally well in 2018, and this is a gorgeous, textbook expression of this terroir to enjoy over the coming two decades. R40-4 SP31-10 -

Erica and Kim Crawford (yes, that one) aren’t afraid to be different. This SB ramps up flavor and texture via the use of oak barrels and concrete eggs. The result is a rounder, richer Savvy B than most in the Marlborough stable, with honeyed grapefruit, peach pit and fresh herbs, and a creamy mouthfeel, neatly balanced by peachy acidity, and etched ever-so-slightly in salty sea air. Food friendly and full of personality.

On the right bank of the Gironde is the Côtes de Blaye, a fairly large wine region where a number of domains stand out. Since the early 60s, the Bantegnies family has been making excellent wines here exclusively from Sauvignon Blanc for the white wines, and in red with the two Cabernets and Merlot. The estate is pruned in Lyre, a way that visually resembles the letter Y. This ‘waist’ allows the vine to be better ventilated and also makes better use of the heat of the sun. A technique that requires great effort, as manual harvesting is always required, but the result is impressive. Château Bertinerie is without a doubt one of the qualitative frontrunners of the appellation and was rightly awarded the title of ‘Grand Cru Non Classé’ by the wine press.

The 2022 PSI hails from the Sorian side of Ribera del Duero. Ripe plum, cherry and herbal aromas mingle with a balsamic touch, soft cedar and a hint of prune. The palate is juicy and creamy in texture, defined by firm, fine-grained tannins and moderate structure. Concentration comes from the old vines, while lively acidity balances the fine tannins. A solid example of Ribera Soriana.

Only half an acre (.2ha) of Chardonnay in the Louise Vineyard at Cristom, clone 95 was planted in 1995, and Cristom winemaker Daniel Estrin is grateful for all that he gets. He spends a lot of time walking these blocks. Daniel likes the phenolics in this Chardonnay, and this wine shows that, a nervousness and edge that is framed by a finely etched saline minerality. Bright, spicy, fresh and minerality. He calls it a coyness and believes this wine will get better in 10 years. Aromatics of grilled citrus, lime blossoms and candied ginger liveliness. The palate dances beautifully between that fine edge and a depth of creamy citrus fruit. Brilliance, savoury and saline it’s a thing of beauty.
