Vega Sicilia 2015 Alion Ribera del Duero

Youthful purple. An expansive, highly complex bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, incense, candied flowers and vanilla, and a smoky mineral flourish adds urgency and lift. Sweet and seamless on entry, offering palate-staining blackberry, cherry compote and spicecake flavors and suggestions of mocha and cola. Tightens up steadily on the back half but shows no hard edges. Finishes with excellent, dark-berry-driven tenacity and smooth tannins coming in slowly. R38-5

  • Pintia

    Vega Sicilia 2015 Pintia

    $55.00$330.00

    Toro Spain

The only wine produced here is the 2015 Pintia, which, in the warm and dry 2015, reaches 15% alcohol and has moderate acidity and a creamy, soft texture, with plenty of concentration, ripeness and tannins. It fermented in oak vats and matured in oak barrels (new and used, French and American) for 12 months. It was a powerful vintage, and they did part of the malolactic fermentation in oak vats instead of 100% in barrique to keep some of the freshness, and they also have 15,000 liters of wine that can mature in stainless steel and rotate some lots in vat before they are put in barrique. All this goes in the direction of keeping the freshness of the wine in a zone where power comes naturally, and all the tools are welcomed, including the use of different toast in the barrels. All this seems to have paid off, and even if the wine is powerful and tannic, it has good balance and the tannins are fine-grained. This has reached a good balance between power and elegance. 203,857 bottles, 6,496 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in May 2017.

  • Venge Res

Venge 2018 Bone Ash Cabernet Sauvignon

    $148.99

    Napa Valley California
    Jeb Dunnuck 96 Rating
Another gem of a wine, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Bone Ash has a richer, full-bodied, concentrated style that will benefit from bottle age. More backward notes of darker currants, tobacco, chocolate, and lead pencil give way to a layered, seamless beauty that builds nicely with time in the glass, offering terrific tannins, the purity of fruit that's the hallmark of the vintage, an expansive texture, and a great finish. Don't be afraid to throw this in a decanter if drinking any time soon, and it's going to have 20-25 years of overall longevity. BX-9 BX-12

Offered at a great price, this blends 63% Zinfandel with smaller amounts of Charbono, Petite Sirah and Syrah. A mix of bramble berry and lifted acidity blends with plenty of gamy black pepper, toasted oak and baking spice to round out the picture.

Our 2019 vintage of this wine establishes itself smack in the middle of big, bold, and balanced. Eight acres of gnarly old-vine Zinfandel from our newest estate produces this testament to Napa Valley history. Impenetrable, glass coating color leads fans of Zinfandel to loads of blackberries, white pepper spice, sweet honeysuckle, crushed blue herbs and a very full, viscous, and lengthy finish. This is approachable upon release and will age, when cellared correctly, for 5 to 8 years.

The 2004 La Muse, a blend of 88% Merlot / 8% Cabernet Franc / 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, is equal parts Alexander Mountain, Knight’s Valley and Bennett Valley fruit with a tiny bit from Dry Creek. The wine grew incrementally as it sat in the glass. A dense purple color was followed by aromas of loamy soil, charcoal, asphalt, chocolate, freshly brewed espresso and abundant blackberry and cassis fruit. This deep, rich beauty is still young and primary, but is loaded with potential. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2035. SG-1

The myth perpetrated by Old World wine proponents is that California wines don’t age. Those critics need to taste Verité, because these wines are aging far slower than I imagined. The 2005 La Joie (67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec) tips the scales at 14.7% alcohol. It received the same 18 months in 100% new oak. It is interesting that Pierre Seillan said that he thought the high-elevation vineyards of Sonoma that go into Verité (self-serving, os course) are his greatest sites in the world for Bordeaux varietals. But remember – he’s from Bordeaux! This multidimensional wine, which enjoyed a 4-5 day cool, pre-fermentation maceration, has a provocative bouquet of blackberry, cassis, new saddle leather, Christmas fruitcake, graphite and high-quality unsmoked cigar tobacco. It is profound, extremely full-bodied and massive in the mouth, but not heavy or astringent in any way. This is perfection in a glass, and a tribute to what Sonoma can achieve. Give this wine another 4-5 years, and drink it over the following 30+ years. SG-1

The 2012 Le Desir (64% Cabernet Franc, 24% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Malbec) reminds me of a young vintage of Ausone, such as 2005. The wine has amazing minerality and an explosive blueberry nose intermixed with blackberries, new saddle leather, charcoal and camphor. It is full-bodied, with espresso notes emerging on the palate. There are 1,900 cases of this super-endowed, prodigious wine that should drink well for 35-40 years. How fun it would be for mega-millionaires to put this in a blind tasting of a great vintage of Ausone in 10, 20 or 30 years from now. R37-2
