With the 2017 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Rapet has produced his finest white since 2014. The wine opens in the glass with a classy nose of ripe lemons, green apple, white flowers and crushed chalk, framed by subtle hints of oatmeal and beeswax. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with excellent concentration and broad shoulders, but also promising structural tension and reserve. The long, chalky finish is penetrating and intense. This is well worth seeking out. R22-1 -

A relatively new cuvée that encompasses all the permitted varieties of the appellation and is brought up in amphora, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Apotres offers a beautiful perfume of black raspberry and blackberry fruits interwoven with loads of spring flowers, white truffle, spice, and sappy garrigue aromas and flavors. This beauty is seamless, medium to full-bodied, and my money is on it being the finest vintage for this cuvée to date. BX-5 -

The stunning 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Imperiale comes from old vines in two sandy parcels—one in Pied Long and one in la Crau. Exotic aromas of orange zest, Campari-like spice and exquisitely ripe cherries appear on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is silky and creamy in texture yet airy and vibrant, with a long, zesty finish. It’s a definite candidate for wine of the vintage, alongside its Mourvèdre-based stablemate, La Part des Anges. Drink: 2025-2040. SP33-6

Another remarkable effort is the 2017 Gigondas Clovis Saurel, which is a single vineyard cuvée made from 100% Grenache. Rock star notes of kirsch and mulled dark fruits are intermixed with lots of sappy flowers and incense aromas and flavors. It's deep and full-bodied, with a wonderful sense of elegance and purity and ultra-fine tannins. It's going to benefit from a year or three of bottle age and cruise in cool cellars for 10-15 years. Typical of the single-village Macon style, this wine is unoaked and emphasizes the fresh fruit and floral character of the Chardonnay grape. It is fresh and clean with notes of white flowers, Asian pear, lime, and elegant minerality. Full of energy but not sharp, this is a dry white wine for light meals or just sipping with friends. This wine is extremely food-friendly and also great as an aperitif. It will pair with a wide array of dishes including goat cheese, white fish, and shellfish, roasted chicken, and grilled vegetables.
