Eighteen Eighty One Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
Price range: $29.99 through $162.00California
Enjoyabilityfactor 93 Rating
Harvested from vineyards across Napa Valley, this bold Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of warmer climate hillside vineyard fruit and valley floor fruit creating a wine that celebrates the region’s diversity and complexity. A deep dark purple in the glass, this wine opens with a bouquet of boysenberry, bourbon and toasted vanilla aromas with a waft of caramel. Full-bodied with a plush entry, layers of brown sugar, cocoa, mulling spices and currants fill the mouth and are complemented by rich, round tannins. The finish is long and smooth.

Intense aromas of black fruit, cocoa powder, black olives, dried violets, tar and cigar box. Some black peppercorn, too. It’s full-bodied with firm, chalky tannins. Incredible intensity and purity of fruit with gorgeous breadth and depth. Superb, new-wave Napa red. 80% cabernet sauvignon, the rest mostly Cabernet Franc with a hit of Petit Verdot. El Enemigo 2020 Mendoza Gran Enemigo
Price range: $99.99 through $570.00Mendoza Argentina
Wine Advocate 95 Rating
Tasting three vintages, I see great regularity in the blended Gran Enemigo. The 2020 Gran Enemigo was produced with 50% Malbec, 25% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot from Gualtallary, going back to the usual blend. The wine shows exceptionally well, as some wines can show a bit ripe and sometimes fatigued in this warmer year, but this is fresh and lively, expressive and with a solid palate with restraint and balance and no excess. The texture is velvety from very fine tannins, and there’s juicy fruit with no concession for sweetness. It has similar parameters to the other vintages I tasted next to it, with 13.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.4. This is still very young. 24,000 bottles were filled in July 2021.

Sourced from 100-year-old pergola-trained vines in Rivadavia’s El Mirador Vineyard, the 2022 Bonarda contains 15% cofermented Cabernet Franc from Gualtallary and matured in a mix of foudre, barrique and stainless steel for 15 months. It is inky, roasted and savory on the nose, introducing an immensely concentrated, tensile palate before concluding with a sturdy and taut finish.

El Enemigo 2022 Cabernet Franc
Price range: $29.99 through $300.00Mendoza Argentina
Jeb Dunnuck 95 Rating
The 2022 Cabernet Franc is high-toned, fresh, and mineral-driven, with supple tannin and unobtrusive oak. Medium-bodied, it’s well put together and a screaming value for the modest price. This will age well given its natural mouthwatering acidity and firm structure; cellar through 2037.

Elena Walch 2023 Pinot Grigio
Price range: $21.99 through $216.00Veneto Italy
Wine Spectator 91 Rating
Elegant, with an appealing, creamy nappe to the texture as it carries notes of ripe pear, peach skin, blood orange peel, green almond and orchard blossoms. A tangy streak of salinity and lively acidity focus and refresh the finely woven flavors and nicely spicy finish.

Elk Cove 2021 Pinot Noir Clay Court Vineyard
$44.99Willamette Valley Oregon
Jeb Dunnuck 94 Rating
Deep ruby, the 2021 Pinot Noir Clay Court is layered with floral and spice notes as well as black raspberry liqueur, anise, mossy earth, and cracked pepper. Medium to full-bodied, with an elegant mouthfeel and a beautiful texture, it offers fine tannins and a silky, clean, rounded palate of fruit. Long on the palate and very well-balanced, it’s hard to resist now, but I imagine this will improve over the next 6-8 years. SP8-6
