Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 SMD Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain is redolent of crème de cassis, dried mulberries, fruitcake and fragrant earth, with hints of fallen leaves, tobacco leaf, earth, spice box and chocolate box. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is chock-full of spicy black fruit preserves with a firm, grainy texture and plenty of freshness, finishing long and layered. Only 547 cases were made. -

The essence of the historic Monte Rosso Vineyard’s bright red volcanic soils appeared to be magically carried over into the aromatics and color of the wine during fermentation. However, post elevage and assemblage, the wine transmogrified itself into a cabernet of blue/black complexion. The aromatics are effusive of freshly baked mixed berry pie, cinnamon, allspice, bay leaf, and sweet cacaoa nibs from the 60% new French Oak barrels. On the palate, this wine is probably the least tannic in our entire portfolio of Cabernets. The pedigree of the Monte Rosso vineyard, especially considering the difficult growing conditions of the 2020 vintage, is exemplified by the intensity of fruit and electric minerality. The wine’s extended finish is enveloped with a welcoming intensity of medium-fine tannin. -

Shy at first, this wine opens up with elevated notes of spearmint, ginger, and white tea flower on the nose. The 60% whole cluster appears to educate the overt fruitiness provided by the very warm 2022 vintage. Here too there is just enough wood to remark upon serving as a backdrop for the more deeply pitched aromas of plum, dark raspberry and warm earth scents. This dusty and delicious effort should also reward up to a decade of cellaring. The palate is full-bodied there’s no arguing otherwise and unfolds with dense, concentrated layers of dark berry liqueur and crushed minerals. Even with such a luxurious, palate-coating mouthfeel, it never loses sight of its blue-blooded Burgundian identity. One for the Burgundy purists. SP4-4 -

Sourced from the famous Ghost Block Vineyard, the 2019 vintage has bold aromatics of dark cherry, ripe plum and blackcurrant that are met with delicate floral notes of lavender and violet, and finishes with spicy black pepper and clove. On the palate, blackberry, black cherry, and cassis are supported with layers of dark chocolate and cacao and rounded out with herbal notes of bay leaf and tobacco giving the wine stunning richness and depth. Medium to full-bodied with fine grained tannins and nicely balanced acidity create a beautiful long, lengthy finish that shows off the unique terroir of the iconic vineyard from where it originates. Like other family-founded wineries in Napa Valley, Grace Family Vineyards started small, more a dream than a business. It was 1976 and San Francisco stockbroker Richard Grace and his wife bought an old home in St. Helena to raise their family in the country. The couple planted a one-acre vineyard and two years later harvested their first real crop, which they sold to Caymus Vineyard. The Grace family’s grapes were used by Caymus until 1983, when the Grace Family started making their own wine. These days the Graces cultivate a number of vineyards, though production remains highly limited. Only Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are grown, and Grace Family wines are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are prized for their opulence and rich flavors. They are generally available only through a mailing list. Annual production is 200 cases. SP23-1
