August Briggs 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Two Moon Vineyard

    Dry Creek Valley California
    Enjoyabilityfactor 92 Rating
Dry Creek Valley has become a very exciting place to produce mountain Cabernet Sauvignon. Julie Simpson’s remote Two Moon Vineyard is located 1,800 feet up on a steep slope in the mountains far above and miles west of the valley floor. This vineyard is especially appealing because of its razor thin soils and high altitude. These factors lead to small crop levels of high intensity, small berried fruit with substantial tannins. The wine is deep and intense with a concentrated color has inviting aromas of cassis, anise, dark plum and a hint of earth that now comes through with time in the bottle. The taste is where this wine has blossomed into a beauty. Intoxicating flavors of currants, black cherry, green olive and bell pepper are prominent on the first swirl. The wine has mild oak and cedar aromas as well to add to the complexity. It is a pure cabernet sauvignon rich with ample weight and texture yet round with balanced tannins. You can give this wine another seven or ten years of cellaring if you can wait! BX-8

    Ausas 2018 Interpretacion

    Ribera del Duero, Spain
    Wine Advocate 95 Rating
He only produces one wine, of which I tasted the 2018 Interpretación, a classical, ripe and generously oaked Tinto Fino for the long haul. It was produced the same way as in previous years—fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in 225- and 500-liter oak barrels, 35% of them new, for 16 months. It’s a combination of power and elegance, ripeness and balance, still very young with marked oak and plenty of tannins. It’s full-bodied with deep, ripe flavors and a dry finish.

Auteur 2014 Pinot Noir Labyrinth Vineyard

    Green Valley Sonoma County California
    Wine Advocate 95 Rating
Lastly, the 2014 Pinot Noir Labyrinth Vineyard is from an organically farmed Green Valley site planted in Goldridge soils in 1999. It is made 100% from the Pommard selection and saw 75% new French oak for 16 months prior to bottling. The wine is terrific, rich, full-bodied and could easily pass for a Premier Cru Pommard with its notes of apple skin, pomegranate, black cherries and blackberry. There is some earth, spice, cove and plum as well. This is a big, complex, muscular style of Pinot Noir to drink over the next 10-15 years. R40-3

Avignonesi 2014 Riserva Grandi Annate Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG

    Tuscany Italy
    Wine Advocate 94 Rating
Grandi Annate is a wine that has made a most impressive turnaround. The 2013 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Grandi Annate shows the confidence and the pride of its current incarnation. To my nose, this wine speaks the precise language of the appellation. The bouquet is broad and accessible with Sangiovese-driven tones of dried cherry and moist earth or tobacco. But like many of its peers, the bouquet here is more horizontal if you will instead of being vertical. The tightness of the wine’s textual composition is what stands out most and there is a hint of cherry sweetness that adds to the volume and density you feel on the finish.

The philosophy at Azur is to produce wines that express pure, terroir-driven specificities and characteristics. Wine style is a combined expression of the fruit, soil, vines and climate. To produce the highest quality wines, the origin of quality expressed through the vineyards, the fruit and very production practices determine a good wine from a great wine. They wanted to create the highest quality wines representative of their two cultures, French and American. Emphasis on vineyard selection, farming and fruit maturity is key. B Cellars 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Ehrlich Vineyard

    Napa Valley California
    Wine Advocate 96 Rating
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Ehrlich Vineyard is from another spot in Oakville. The production of this wine is 750 cases of unfined and unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon. B Cellars is starting to get my attention and is one of the more exciting and newer producers in Napa Valley, and although they’ve been at it for a while, I have never tasted wines of this quality from them. This is spectacular Cabernet Sauvignon that offers up cedar wood, blackcurrants, blueberry, incense and graphite. It is full-bodied, powerful and rich, but with sweet tannin and the 2014 hallmark of suppleness and charm. Quite deep, opulent and stunningly rich, drink it over the next 20 years. R39-6

  • Barnett Rattlesnake Vineyard

    Barnett Vineyards 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon

    Spring Mountain District Napa Valley
    Wine Advocate 94 Rating

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain is a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot and Merlot. A beautiful example of Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon with its blue and black fruits (raspberries, blueberries interwoven with white flowers), this wine has an opaque purple color, a wonderful sweet kiss of delicate oak and forest floor. It is full-bodied and rich with supple tannins. It is a classic 2014 that is approachable, and frankly irresistible already, but promises to evolve gracefully for another 15 or more years. R45-2

  • Barnett Rattlesnake Vineyard

Barnett Vineyards 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Rattlesnake Vineyard

    Spring Mountain District Napa Valley
    Wine Advocate 95 Rating

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Rattlesnake is their reserve wine and has been called this since 1991, no doubt because of the number of rattlesnakes that populated the property. It is usually their greatest wine, when they declare it. They only made 69 cases in 2014, so this is a tough one to find. The color is opaque ruby/purple and the wine has a few extra gears in it, with plenty of blueberry, cassis, forest floor and white flowers, followed by a full-bodied, beautifully built style of wine. This wine goes on and on – it is incredible rich, but with no defects or hard edges. A full-bodied, lush, elegant, yet powerful wine, this is a classic Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon to drink over the next 20+ years. R40-3
