This full-bodied, incredibly classic Cabernet offers impressive crème de cassis, graphite, and lead pencil notes, terrific mid-palate depth, a wonderful sweetness in its fruit, and a great finish. Coming from gravelly, well-drained soils, it’s full-bodied, has classic To Kalon opulence, ripe tannins, and a great finish. This wine commemorates the reopening of Robert Mondavi Winery, drawing from To Kalon Vineyard and the historic Wappo Hill. The To Kalon components derive from a mix of established and newly replanted blocks, including parcels south of Oakville Grade now delivering fourth-leaf fruit, alongside sections spanning north to south across the property. The Stags Leap fruit comes from some of Ogasawara’s favorite blocks. It bursts from the glass with classic Oakville signatures of dark black fruit, garrigue, mint and tobacco. On the palate, savory olive tapenade emerges alongside ironstone minerality and a crushed-cocoa-nib nuance. The tannins marry Oakville suaveness with Stags Leap power, mineral-laced and assertive, finishing with both grace and muscularity. It shows beautifully into the second and third day, gaining weight as the fruit deepens and takes on a more earth-driven intensity – a clear signal of its capacity to cellar for decades to come. Winemaker Kurtis Ogasawara sought to honor the Mondavi legacy by blending the two sites, which has never been done before. Aged for 20 months in 36% new French oak, the wine is presented with a label that nods to the 1960s-era design, subtly incorporating elements of the newly reopened winery (2026). The lightweight, dark antique-green glass bottle and shorter cork further echo those debut bottlings, some of which may still rest in well-stocked cellars.

“Sixty-five percent of the vines planted in Rockpile are Zinfandel,” says Clay Mauritson. “What’s gotten lost in that narrative is how unbelievable Cabernet Sauvignon is in Rockpile. It has a lot of similarities to places like Napa.” Deep ruby-purple in color, the 2016 Rockpile Cabernet Sauvignon Rockpile Ridge Vineyard is blended of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Malbec, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, aged 20 months in French oak. It has a nose with red and black cherries and currants, milk chocolate, star anise, cardamom, cedar and touches of minerals and beef drippings. Medium to full-bodied, it’s very plush and spicy in the mouth with tons of baby fat fruit, segueing to mineral and licorice notions. It has a firm frame of chalky tannins and good freshness to lift the long, layered finish. Leave this in the cellar for another three to five years and drink it over the next 20+. R45-2 -

Saint Cosme's 2018 Gigondas is a blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 14% Syrah and 1% Cinsault, aged in a combination of new and used oak, with 30% of the volume matured in concrete. Full-bodied and generous, it's round and supple, with no hard edges to hamper the easy flow of asphalt, red raspberries and black cherries across the palate.
