Alion by Vega Sicilia 2014 Tempranillo$456.00
Ribera del Duero Spain
Wine Advocate 94 Rating
2014 is a better vintage in Ribera del Duero than in Rioja, and the 2014 Alión shows it. Sourced from 130 hectares of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) in Ribera del Duero and possibly the most modern of the Vega Sicilia Group wines, it’s silky, voluptuous, jammy, ripe and generous without being too much. The grapes fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak vats, and the wine matured in new and second use French barriques for 12 to 14 months. It’s quite ripe and powerful yet balanced and with great freshness. The palate is medium to full-bodied with lots of fruit, juicy and showy, modern without excess. 284,284 bottles along with 6,500 magnums and some larger formats were produced. You might want to give it some more time in bottle. It was bottled in June 2016. SWS

Aloft 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon$169.99–$899.94
Howell Mountain Napa Valley California
Wine Advocate 95 Rating
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon also tips the scales at 15.5% and had the same oak aging and, like its siblings, is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Like the vintage, this is front-end loaded with beautiful aromatics of blue and black fruits, spring flowers, damp earth and lead pencil shavings. The terrific fruit follows through on the attack and midpalate with sweet tannin and low acidity. The flavor profile builds incrementally to finish with gentleness and opulence. This is a wine to drink over the next 15-20+ years. These are impressive wines and are well worth seeking out.

Emerald straw color. Fruity, minerally aromas of fresh grapefruit, slate, dried papaya, and clover honey with a velvety, vibrant, fruity light-to-medium body and a tingling, complex, medium-long fresh cut grass, cilantro, dill, shiso, echinacea, and lemon lozenge finish with well-integrated, fruit tannins and no oak flavor. A terrific nuanced Sauvignon Blanc with loads of minerality and complex herbal charm.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon rocks up with gregarious black cherries, blackcurrants and warm plums with hints of menthol, chocolate box and fragrant earth. Big, rich and full-bodied, with loads of minted black berry and earthy layers, it has a firm, grainy frame and fantastic length. WBC BX-24

Alvaro Palacios 2016 Les Terrasses Velles Vinyes$34.99–$215.94
Wine Advocate 92-94 Rating
The still unbottled sample of the Garnacha and Cariñena blend 2016 Les Terrasses Velles Vinyes has vibrant acidity in a warm year when ripening stopped as the vines blocked and stopped producing sugar and maintained the acidity. The grapes were small because the year had also been very dry. It’s juicy and with good ripeness and some dusty tannins, reminiscent of the dusty roads among the vineyards of Priorat along with that decomposed slate. There will be 116,000 bottles of the 2016.
