High toned blackcurrant fruit on the nose, dark with soft floral reflections. This is so lovely, juicy and alive with balanced acidity that is deliciously mouthwatering. Supple tannins give a soft padding to the chewy blackcurrant fruit and support the overall frame with edges of liquorice. Nicely finessed but also complex and persistent. Enjoyable with confident winemaking on show.

I always love this wine, and the 2020 Chateau Barde-Haut is a quintessential Saint-Emilion revealing a deep ruby/purple hue, awesome notes of red plum, cherries, tobacco leaf, and chalky earth, full-bodied richness, bright acidity, and fine tannins. A gorgeous wine, it will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for two decades. Best After 2027. SP58-12

Chateau Barreyres shows a sumptuous deep purple color. The nose opens with appealing aromas of fresh red fruit alongside classic features associated with well-managed aging. This is a fine, elegant Cru Bourgeois with a very pleasing profile, including good structure and a full body. The finish is remarkably persistent.

Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. A strong performance from Batailley under blind conditions, easily surpassing its showing at the UGC in London last year. The 2010 has a very elegant bouquet with blackberry, cedar and leather, well defined and very nicely focused, though not the most vigorous amongst its peers. The palate is very well balanced with filigree tannins, perfectly judged acidity and a very appealing “classic” style of Pauillac very the top drawer. What a superb Pauillac – a benchmark Batailley. The 2016 Château Bellefont-Belcier was truly brilliant on all three occasions I was able to taste it, rating 95 twice and 97 once. Coming from a 13.5-hectare vineyard on the magical Côte Pavie (it’s right next door to Larcis-Ducasse) and a blend of 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 20 months in 80% new oak, it offers a black fruit-driven style as well as loads of black raspberries, black cherries, graphite, leafy herbs, and hints of incense. It's powerful, full-bodied, has building sweet tannins, and the rock star purity of fruit that's the hallmark of the vintage. It’s an awesome wine to drink over the coming 20-25 years. SP51-5

The finest wine I've tasted from this estate, the 2020 Chateau Bellefont-Belcier is an incredibly gorgeous blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep ruby/purple-hued, it offers a great nose of cassis, ripe black cherries, camphor, dried flowers, cedar, and forest floor. Bringing gorgeous richness, it nevertheless stays flawlessly balanced, with ultra-fine tannins and a great finish. The purity of fruit here is just about off the charts. While it already offers pleasure, it's going to benefit from short-term cellaring and have 20-25 years of prime drinking. This estate uses a five-day cold soak and fermentation, all in concrete, spanning 25 days. Malolactic fermentation occurs in barrel (four months on lees), and the wine spends 18 months in 30% new French oak, with the balance in once- and twice-used barrels. Yields in 2020 were also reasonable at 34 hectoliters per hectare. Best After 2026. SPBX-6 SP56-4

Rich, dark-fruited aromas with hints of chocolate, spices and hazelnuts. Medium- to full-bodied, meaty and light yet chewy on the palate, with vivid acidity and good fruit concentration. It has a chalky texture at the end. Merlot, malbec, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc.

33% Cabernet Sauvignon & 67% Merlot from the owners of Chateau Pape Clement. Vinified partly in oak barrel, partly in clay amphora, this is polished and finessed but actually more restrained than perhaps I was expecting. A serious wine, with an emphasis on tightly-knitted cassis fruits. An absolutely beautiful whoosh of juicy menthol comes in from mid palate onwards, and a tight tannic crush on the finish that suggests this is going to age well. It’s big shouldered, as all Magrez wines are, but this is a welcome addition to the St Estèphe landscape.

On the right bank of the Gironde is the Côtes de Blaye, a fairly large wine region where a number of domains stand out. Since the early 60s, the Bantegnies family has been making excellent wines here exclusively from Sauvignon Blanc for the white wines, and in red with the two Cabernets and Merlot. The estate is pruned in Lyre, a way that visually resembles the letter Y. This ‘waist’ allows the vine to be better ventilated and also makes better use of the heat of the sun. A technique that requires great effort, as manual harvesting is always required, but the result is impressive. Château Bertinerie is without a doubt one of the qualitative frontrunners of the appellation and was rightly awarded the title of ‘Grand Cru Non Classé’ by the wine press.
