The 2020 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion is a gorgeous, incredibly satisfying Pessac, and it’s certainly up with the finest vintages I’ve tasted from this estate. It has lots of red, blue, and black fruits as well as ample spice, leafy tobacco, truffle, and smoked earth, and it develops a beautiful sense of complexity and nuance with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it shows the vibrant, elegant style of the vintage, has ripe tannins, perfect overall balance, and a great finish. If you love a great Graves, buy a case of this beauty and enjoy over the next two decades. This estate continues to fly too far under the radar for most consumers. SP48-12

The 2010 Château Lascombes is flat-out gorgeous and might be the finest vintage from this château I’ve tasted. Based on 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot that was raised in 90% new French oak, it has a dense purple/plum hue as well as a blockbuster-like style in its darker currants, cassis, smoky tobacco, incense, and graphite aromas and flavors. Beautifully textured, full-bodied, dense, and concentrated, but still graceful and beautifully balanced, it’s clearly in its prime drinking window yet has another 2-3 decades of overall longevity. It is impossible to resist today. SP58-12

This is a powerful wine, with wood aging that adds richness to the dense tannins. Some tough extraction has not detracted from the ripe fruit or structure and will go as the wine matures. It should be ready to drink from 2026. SP49-12

The second wine of Château Lascombes, the 2022 Chevalier de Lascombes is beautifully textured and medium-bodied, offering bright cassis and darker, almost blue fruits, alongside spicy floral nuances. It has an elegant mouthfeel and a great finish. Aged in oak barrels, this should evolve well for 10-15 years. SP55-6

Based on 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Château Lascombes pulls from 40% of the total production and was aged 18 months mostly in barrels (60% new) with a small portion in foudre. This inky hued beauty boasts a rich, concentrated, full-bodied, well-oaked style as well as pure cassis and darker berry fruits, some graphite, scorched earth, and licorice nuances, terrific overall balance, and a great finish.

Leads off with sweet bay leaf, tobacco and warm earth hints, which are quickly met by a core of steeped plum and black currant fruit. Shows subtle charcoal dusting and a note of cast iron that add fuel to the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

The 2020 Haut-Medoc Giscours is a very pretty wine. It emerges from a 60-hectare holding between Giscours and Cantemerle. Bright, aromatic and medium in body, the Haut-Medoc Giscours is an absolute delight. Freshly cut flowers, mint, red berry fruit and herbs are finely cut in this nuanced, salivating red. Lively acids round out the finish. I imagine this will age exquisitely, but I would also give it a year or two in bottle to soften a bit. The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot.

56% Cabernet sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 7% Cabernet franc & 2% petit Verdot. The second wine of classed growth Calon Ségur, this is becoming impressive in its own right. This vintage shows the structured side of Saint-Estèphe while also showing generous black fruits and bright acidity. It is set to age well.
