This is really fine on the palate with wonderfully integrated tannins that give tension and focus. It’s medium-bodied with lovely berry, cherry, cedar and spice. Peaches and flower stems, too. Creamy texture. Extremely long and vivid. Structured, but showing beautiful drinkability with wonderful balance and form.

Super classic Brunello from a classic vintage, being released now. The perfume to this is really something, with cherries, flowers, lead pencil and light hints of graphite. Then it moves to raspberries and black cherries with some sandalwood shavings. You just want to smell it. Clear and transparent. Full-bodied with very fine and succinct tannins that fill the mouth and show super tension and form. Extremely long and structured. Beautiful now, but this will age for decades ahead. Drink or hold. -

The organic Col d’Orcia 2020 Brunello di Montalcino offers a classic Sangiovese bouquet with warm-vintage intensity. It shows sweet aromas of raspberry tart and cooked cherry. There is a delicate element of smoked spice at the back. The tannins are open-knit, and the wine offers immediate drinking pleasure. It should be exciting to follow this wine’s future evolution. “We try to protect the freshness of Sangiovese,” says Count Francesco Marone Cinzano. “That is our reading of traditional Brunello.”

Collefrisio 2022 Appassimento

The successful winemakers of Collefrisio in Abruzzo also offer a beautiful appassimento. The 60% montepulciano and 20% merlot grapes dry on the vine and are only harvested in the second half of October. The ‘normally’ harvested sangiovese adds freshness to the wine and creates a nice balance with the concentrated, dried grapes. Collefrisio’s winemaker Amedeo de Luca dispenses with oak ripening and prefers the concentrated fruit aromas that characterize the appassimento method. The result is a dark-colored red wine that smells beautifully of ripe blackberries and cherries. It also has a great taste thickness with a lot of flexibility.
