Saxum 2023 4hearts Vineyard
$199.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Wine Advocate 95 Rating
Typically one of the most distinctive wines in the Saxum portfolio, the 2023 4hearts Vineyard is no exception and is an incredibly sturdy example, fitting as the last vintage of the cuvée. It is composed of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Petite Sirah and 25% Zinfandel made with 25% stem inclusion and a 22-month élevage in 225-liter and 300-liter barrels, half of which are American oak from Canton. The American oak component is prevalent yet harmonious from the outset. A red-fruited, resinous and gourmand nose introduces a dense, compact palate livened by bracing acidity. It finishes on a focused, taut note supported by grainy yet refined tannins that will benefit from a few years in the cellar to integrate. SP22-2 -
Saxum 2023 G2 Vineyard
$199.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Jeb Dunnuck 98 Rating
Based on 72% Grenache, 13% Syrah, 6% Mataro, 5% Graciano, and 4% Carignan, aged 22 months in a mix of amphora and French oak, the 2023 G2 Vineyard boasts a sensational perfume of dark berries, black cherries, scorched earth, graphite, and peppery, floral nuances. It’s full-bodied, with a seamless, textured mouthfeel, ripe yet polished tannins, and that rare mix of richness with elegance. This shows the warmer style of the vintage while staying light on its feet and, oh, so drinkable. I love it today, yet it has at least 15 years of prime drinking ahead of it. Drink 2025-2040. Saxum 2023 Heart Stone Vineyard
$199.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Jeb Dunnuck 98 Rating
The last vintage from this site as the team transitions to more estate fruit, the 2023 Heart Stone Vineyard is based on 51% Graciano, 27% Syrah, 12% Grenache, and 5% each Petite Sirah and Touriga Nacional. It was fermented with 10% stems in concrete fermenters and aged 21 months in 76% new French and Austrian oak (300-liter and 600-liter barrels). Deep purple-hued, it’s a rich, powerful red with notes of red and black cherries, sappy flowers, juniper, licorice, and exotic spice. Full-bodied and layered, it has a deep mid-palate, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s another brilliant wine from this team. Drink: 2025-2040. SP19-6 -
Saxum 2023 Paderewski Vineyard

Red and black fruits, wildflowers, pepper, and exotic nuances of peach and orange blossom all emerge from this medium to full-bodied wine. Saxum Vineyards 2020 Hexe
$199.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Jeb Dunnuck 96 Rating
A step up over the Rocket Block and one of the finest 2020s out there, the 2020 Hexe is 51% Grenache, 17% Petite Sirah, and the rest Graciano and Mourvèdre, all from a single parcel of old vines in the James Berry Vineyard. Darker red and black fruits, smoked herbs, graphite, and spicy notes all dominate the bouquet, and it’s full-bodied, has terrific concentration, and ripe, polished tannins. It’s a gorgeous bottle of wine. SP36-5 -
Saxum Vineyards 2021 G2 Vineyard
$199.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Jeb Dunnuck 97-99 Rating
Not yet bottled but already incredibly impressive, the 2021 G2 will be Grenache-dominated but includes smaller amounts of Syrah and Graciano. It’s loaded with red and black raspberry-like fruits as well as tons of floral, pepper, and spicy nuances, which carry to a full-bodied, pure, elegant red. It’s remarkably complex for such a young wine and has incredible tannins and a gorgeous finish. Don’t miss it. SP36-5 -
Saxum Vineyards 2021 Hexe
$249.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Jeb Dunnuck 98+ Rating
A clear step up over the 2020 of this cuvée, the 2021 Hexe is up there with the 2016 and 2018. Coming from a south-facing parcel in the James Berry Vineyard (there’s a kiss of G2 fruit) and based on 40% Grenache, 19% Graciano, and the rest Syrah, Mataro, and Petite Sirah, it sports a dense purple hue as well as awesome levels of red and black fruits, peppery herbs, sandalwood, loamy earth, and leather. I love its overall complexity, and it’s full-bodied, with a multi-dimensional mouthfeel, lots of structure, and a blockbuster of a finish. Hide bottles for 4-5 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 15-20 years. SP21-6 -
Saxum Vineyards 2022 Rocket Block James Berry Vineyard
$199.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Wine Advocate 97 Rating
The 2022 Rocket Block James Berry Vineyard contains a lower percentage of Grenache this year, due to the high proportion of Mataro added during fermentation to balance the high sugar and high acid profile of Grenache in this harvest. It opens with a lush, red-fruited nose, complemented by dried flower, wet clay and lavender aromas, followed by a full-bodied, concentrated and punchy profile that characterizes this bottling, while retaining remarkable lift and dexterity. The finish is lively and impressively refined, cascading with layers of vibrant acidity, slowly swelling tannins and retronasal perfume. Despite the unmistakable power contained here, I find this to be an uncommonly elegant expression of the 2022 vintage. Composed of 54% Grenache, 38% Mataro, 4% Syrah and 4% Counoise, it matured for 32 months in 73% new 300-liter barrels with 22% stem inclusion. SP22-2 -
Schrader 2019 LPV Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
$399.99Oakville Napa Valley California
Jeb Dunnuck 99 Rating
Almost pure perfection in a glass, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard comes from a more rocky vineyard located on the west side of St. Helena. Black fruits, savory herbs, flowers, and crushed rock notes give way to a full-bodied, flawlessly balanced, seamless 2019. It has the ripe yet elegant style of the vintage (as well as the vineyard), ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and a gorgeous finish. R21-2
