Weighty and rich but nicely structured, this deeply flavorful wine is draped in pure black cherry and dried blueberry flavors on moderate to full tannins. A classic style of cabernet that pleases now and has room to grow with time.

Chateau St Jean 2021 Chardonnay Carneros
$29.99 – $138.00California
Jeb Dunnuck 92 Rating
A bright yellow color, the 2022 Chardonnay Carneros is expressive and refined on the nose, with notes of honeyed citrus, tangerine, golden apples, and waxy Marcona almonds. Full-bodied and very appealing on the palate, it casts a wide net, as it retains good freshness and doesn’t feel cloying or heavy. It will drink well over the next few years.

E. Guigal Chateau D’Ampuis 2019 Cote-Rotie
$179.99 – $900.00Northern Rhone Valley France
Jeb Dunnuck 97 Rating
The 2019 Côte Rôtie Chateau D’Ampuis is another beautiful, layered, incredibly impressive wine. Ripe darker fruits, smoked meats, tapenade, and ground pepper all define the bouquet, and it’s full-bodied, with a wealth of baby fat, lots of tannins, and a great, great finish. It’s certainly in line with past vintages and perhaps shows a touch more tannic structure than the 2018.

E. Guigal 2019 Cote-Rotie Brune et Blonde
$89.99 – $480.00Northern Rhone Valley France
Vinous 95 Rating
Inky ruby. Vibrant, spice-accented cherry and boysenberry scents are complicated by hints of black pepper, candied flowers and licorice. Supple and broad in the mouth, offering juicy red and blue fruit preserves, spicecake, olive paste and violet pastille flavors that tighten up steadily with air. The floral note repeats strongly on the clinging finish, which shows excellent clarity and velvety, slowly building tannins. There are almost a quarter-million bottles of this wine made in a typical vintage, by the way. 50% new oak.

Chateau Simard 2016 Red Blend St Emilion Grand Cru
$44.99 – $210.00Bordeaux France
Jeb Dunnuck 90 Rating
From the team at Ausone, the 2016 Château Simard is made from 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc brought up in just 30% new French oak. It’s a medium-bodied, classic, nicely balanced Saint-Emilion that has loads of upfront charm. Offering up notes of dark fruits and tobacco, it has an easygoing, rounded texture and is geared for drinking over the coming decade or so. It’s a delicious, satisfying effort.

Antinori 2020 Guado al Tasso Bolgheri Superiore
$134.99 – $720.00Bolgheri Italy
Wine Advocate 96 Rating
The Marchesi Antinori 2020 Bolgheri Superiore Guado al Tasso sees Cabernet Franc at over 30% of the blend in this vintage, with the rest going to Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% to 20% to Merlot. Matarocchio was not produced this year, and this wine benefits from the extra Cabernet Franc as a result. The 2019 and 2021 vintages of Guado al Tasso are quite concentrated and rich, whereas 2020 is leaner in texture, along the lines of the edition we saw made in 2010. There was rain in September. Managing Director Renzo Cotarella says he would not describe 2020 as a hot vintage because the rain did pose challenges at the end of the growing season. In Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, budbreak is earlier than in other appellations, and the growing season is longer as a result. This is a benefit to the international varieties used here. The wine shows nice richness and intensity. The Cabernet Franc definitely comes through and adds the characteristic vertical lift and linearity that the grape is known for. You get black fruit, spice, white pepper and no signs of bitter stems or bramble. Sweet, almost milky tannins are interlocked with fresh acidity to give this wine good cellaring potential. The new oak was dialed back a bit in this vintage. SP48-5

Guado al Tasso 2016 Bolgheri Superiore
$159.99Tuscany Italy
James Suckling 98 Rating
Beautiful center palate of fruit here with ripe and silky tannins that are resolved and fine-grained. Full-bodied, polished and ever so refined. Oyster shell, stone and hints of rosemary and lavender. Driven finish. Better after 2022. R39-1 -
Guado al Tasso 2019 Bolgheri Superiore
$139.99Tuscany Italy
James Suckling 98 Rating
This has a wild and perfumed nose of dried thyme, sage, blackberries, cocoa, graphite and white and green peppercorns. Then dried flowers. Full-bodied with firm, tight and precise tannins. Vibrant. There’s so much character and structure. A new benchmark for this winery. More cabernet franc than in the past. Best yet? 65% cabernet sauvignon, 25% cabernet franc and 10% merlot. Try from 2025.
