Let’s start with the territory. We are in Saint-Julien, a renowned wine region located in the Bordeaux region. Here, the production is mainly focused on red wines, especially from the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. Known for their elegance, structure and longevity. Saint-Julien extends over a relatively small territory. Despite this, it is home to some of the most prestigious wineries in the Bordeaux region. Here, the soils are rich in pebbles that ensure good drainage, creating the ideal conditions for growing vines. This is particularly the case of Beychevelle, whose vines are located on the magnificent gravel slopes that slope down to the Garonne and in the immediate vicinity of the Gironde. In addition, the presence of the two rivers guarantees a beneficial and regulating effect on the climate. 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc, this red Bordeaux fully respects the soul of its terroir of origin. Garnet red and compact, the nose reveals notes of black fruits, with notes of cedar and aromatic herbs. On the palate, on the other hand, it reveals a pleasantly full-bodied wine, with firm and well-integrated tannins. Juicy and flavorful, it has a well-balanced structure, with a savory finish. An excellent “second wine” of the Château, it is perfect to accompany meat-based lunches and dinners. Its value for money is also excellent.

I was able to taste the 2017 James Berry Vineyard beside the perfect 2016 and there’s not much difference between these two sensational wines. The 2017 reveals a deep ruby color as well as more straight, focused, yet beautifully concentrated style that reveals gorgeous black raspberry and blackberry fruits interwoven with pepper, spring flowers, earth, and incense. Coming from a 6.32-hectare parcel and a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Chateau Feytit-Clinet sports a dense purple hue to go with blockbuster aromatics of ripe black cherries, cassis, chocolaty oak, leafy herbs, and damp earth. Full-bodied and concentrated, with remarkable purity and ultra-fine tannins, this utterly brilliant Pomerol will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and will evolve for 20-25 years or more if well-stored. The 2020 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a total stunner. For the first time I can remember, Les Carmes Haut-Brion marries all of its elements so well that nothing stands out. In the past, the high percentage of Franc and/or the whole clusters were evident. The 2020 is the first modern vintage in which all the elements are so well balanced. Dark red/purplish fruit, rose petal, mint, lavender, dried herbs and incense all build in a ravishing Pessac-Léognan that will take your breath away. The 2020 is 40% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Merlot, picked between September 14 to 26, which is early here. Whole cluster was 55%. Vinification took place over five weeks, using very gentle extraction, with no pumpovers or punchdowns. Aging was 80% new oak, 11% 18hL foudres and 9% amphorae. In tasting, the 2020 is simply magnificent. There are no soloists, just the most exceptionally vivid, breathtaking orchestra imaginable.
