Rudd 2014 Samantha’s Cabernet Sauvignon$174.99–$1,019.94
Oakville Napa Valley California
Wine Advocate 94+ Rating
Rudd’s “Samantha’s” cuvée, in the tradition of great second wines like Palmer’s Alter Ego, is simply a different expression of the estate, made to be a more forward, drinkable wine. Jeb Dunnuck noticed too, calling it a “charming, ripe, sexy beauty that’s loaded with notions of blackcurrants, spicy oak, and lead pencil-like aromas and flavors. Ripe, opulent, and much more forward and sexy than the Cabernet Sauvignon Estate. R46-6

In 2014, we hand-picked three tons of our Cabernet Sauvignon grapes swiftly. The majority of the grapes came from the dry farmed 9.5 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon planted on the estate located one-third mile north of the Oakville Crossroad. Our soils are of Pleasanton and Bale loam series with spots of silt and gravel. Rootstock is Teleki 5C on 6 x 12 ft. spacing. This year the wine was a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petite Sirah and 3% Syrah. 60% New French Oak and 10% New American aged for 24 months.

Dark garnet with a shimmery surface. Tall, wine-colored tears cling to the glass wall, moving slowly downward. Smoky black cherry, blackberry jam, blueberry, dried violet, cigar box, dried twigs, brown spice and black pepper. Black cherry, blackberry, cassis, tobacco, leather, dried violet, toasty oak, spice and black pepper. Very long and very plush with chewy tannins that shepherd a spreading dryness across the palate. Enjoy this wine with your favorite zesty BBQ… like spare ribs!

This wine flexes its muscles in a totally lovable way, offering up a heady mélange of pineapple, grapefruit, fresh bell peppers, grass and some salty sea air. The acidity is crisp and zingy, balanced by a slightly slippery texture and finishing on a pleasing grapefruit note. JB
