The 2016 Terry Hoage Vineyard comes from Jennifer and Terry Hoage's Vineyard (of TH Estate) and is 43% each of Grenache and Syrah, with the balance Mourvèdre. This purple-hued beauty boasts a rocking bouquet of crème de cassis, smoked plums, charcoal, and damp earth, with more violets and floral notes developing with time in the glass. While a big wine, it just glides across the palate and is straight up seamless, silky, and elegant, with a weightless texture, full body, sweet tannins, and a great finish. Like the 2016s from Smith, it has ample underlying structure and density, yet the wine is so perfectly balanced it's hard to even notice. Drink this brilliant wine any time over the coming 10-15 years. R5-2

Scattered Peaks offers intense black and red fruit aromas bolstered by hints of mountain sage and a touch of anise. On the palate, dark brooding fruit flavors of black cherry and cassis mingle with essence of black licorice and violets as well as espresso and dark chocolate notes. Firm and silky tannins and a touch of vanilla support the long, lingering finish of this classic Napa Valley Cabernet. BRK

Vividly “Graves-like” in both its flavor profile and elegant style, this is the best Scribe Cabernet yet produced. The nose is a focused perfume of ripe black cherry, Italian Maraschino cherry, black currant, blueberry, grilled black fig, cedar, leather, graphite, charcoal, mocha, peppercorn and dark pipe tobacco scents. The wine is amazingly seductive already, as the texture is racy yet tongue-coating, and the flavors of diamond clarity. A core of syrup drenched Amarena cherries holds center-stage on the palate, with all the other promised elements seeming to follow in lock-step. The finish is ultra-long and the expected gripping tannins are polished into softness and then smothered by a wave of flavor. This beauty will be glorious if allowed the five to ten years its concentration suggests, yet it is so delicious now that few bottles are likely to remain when it achieves full maturity. Only 650 cases produced. “This description comes from the San Francisco Wine panel who I discovered gave it exactly the same rating as I did.” PRG R40-6 BX-9

Deep, dark, intense, with pleasant slight granite shades. A sequence of perceptions of cherry, plum, and black cherries under liquor and toasted almond; interesting final notes of coffee, tobacco and cocoa. Powerful, warm, spacious, wrapping, light tannic sensation, persistent, long pleasant final sensation of clean oral cavity and the subsequent salivation feeling. Combines well with game and grilled red meats as well as with long seasoned aged hard cheese. Also a great contemplation wine.
