Kumeu River 2023 Hunting Hill Chardonnay
$71.99 – $372.00Auckland New Zealand
Wine Enthusiast 95 Rating
A medium gold hue, this top notch Chardy from New Zealand’s North Island opens with rich, heady apricot and nougat aromas. There’s a briny element—florals too—and a lactic, toasty underbelly. A juicy fruited tang on the elegant palate keeps the mouth watering. It’s countered by a lovely slippery texture. A complete and totally delicious wine now, it could also evolve nicely over the next decade.

Kumeu River 2022 Hunting Hill Chardonnay
$69.99 – $360.00Auckland New Zealand
Wine Advocate 95 Rating
The 2022 Hunting Hill Chardonnay is mouth filling and obvious in its outlay of flavor in the mouth—yellow peach, apricot, Golden Delicious apple, beeswax/lanolin and ripe lime flesh. The flutter of acidity that feathers the fruit is compelling and alluring in its power and juiciness. An exciting wine. It’s a wine I want to drink (I will; the perks) and a wine I am enjoying considering too. It’s intellectual and sensorial/corporeal in equal measure. The Hunting Hill Vineyard was planted in 1982 and overlooks Mate’s Vineyard. This is a pleasurable, exciting, fleshy, complex, salty, kaleidoscopic wine. Excellent. Recommended. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Kumeu River 2023 Estate Chardonnay
$39.99 – $198.00Auckland New Zealand
Wine Enthusiast 94 Rating
A blend of multiple sites, Kumeu’s “Estate” bottling, in some ways, marries the best of everything. It’s a fruity number, with bright peach, melon, nougat, ginger and white blossom aromas right from first sniff, underscored gently by more lactic, toasty ones. The palate strikes a lovely balance of vibrant, crisp acidity and creamy roundness.

Kumeu River 2023 Coddington Chardonnay
$59.99 – $324.00Auckland New Zealand
Wine Advocate 94 Rating
The 2023 Coddington Chardonnay is sleek and polished. The fruit is on the kiwi fruit, almond meal and white peach end of the spectrum, and the fruit is lean. Tightly coiled acidity is gently embossed into the fruit; it is neatly packaged and very tight. The wine builds as it opens, and while the first sip was difficult to get a reading on, the ensuing interactions are juicier and more saliva-inducing. The restraint is attractive, and the back-palate weighting of flavor similarly makes for charming drinking. 12.6% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Kumeu River 2022 Coddington Chardonnay
$54.99 – $300.00Auckland New Zealand
Wine Enthusiast 95 Rating
This is a quiet Coddington compared with past vintages, but its delicacy brings a certain charm. Toast, cream, rocks and seashells all weave between peach pit, melon, pineapple rind and ginger. The palate is wonderfully structured, tight and focused but with concentration, freshness and balance. Still young, it could age for many years but has an approachability now, too.

Saxum Vineyards 2021 Hexe
$249.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Jeb Dunnuck 98+ Rating
A clear step up over the 2020 of this cuvée, the 2021 Hexe is up there with the 2016 and 2018. Coming from a south-facing parcel in the James Berry Vineyard (there’s a kiss of G2 fruit) and based on 40% Grenache, 19% Graciano, and the rest Syrah, Mataro, and Petite Sirah, it sports a dense purple hue as well as awesome levels of red and black fruits, peppery herbs, sandalwood, loamy earth, and leather. I love its overall complexity, and it’s full-bodied, with a multi-dimensional mouthfeel, lots of structure, and a blockbuster of a finish. Hide bottles for 4-5 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 15-20 years. SP21-6 -

Saxum 2021 Cayucos Ridge Vineyard Red
$249.99San Luis Obispo
Jeb Dunnuck 97 Rating
A new wine that comes from a higher elevation site sitting just four miles off the Pacific Coast, the 2021 Cayucos Ridge Vineyard is all Syrah and has a singular style in its white pepper, fennel, game, and ripe blue fruit aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied and concentrated, with good ripeness, it just screams cool-climate California Syrah. SP21-4 -
