Hess 2022 Lion Tamer Red
$44.99 – $240.00Napa Valley California
James Suckling 92 Rating
A wonderfully layered, suave and creamy red that’s so easy to sip and enjoy now. This is largely due to the 60% malbec grapes in this blend, that when blended with zinfandel give a smoothness in texture, a deep color and what winemaker Stephanie Pope calls a blueberry pie effect. Full-bodied, rich in fine-grained tannins and broad in a chocolaty, slightly jammy way. Drink now.

Hess Collection 2018 Chardonnay Panthera
$33.99 – $180.00Russian River Valley California
Panthera Chardonnay showcases the dynamism and energy of the Russian River Valley as this wine displays both a vibrant aspect of fruit and a confident oak profile. This wine presents beautiful layers of crisp, bright Asian pear and golden apple that lead to luscious notes of lemon curd developed from malolactic fermentation. The deft baseline of toasted oak introduces notes of buttered French toast and hints of crème brûlée, which are complemented by a signature backbone of acidity nurtured on the Sonoma Coast.

A great balance between vivid fruit flavors, savory accents and mouthwatering acidity make this wine attractive to almost any wine drinker and set it up for infinite food pairings. Light tannins support red cherries, black tea and cranberry notes. Delicious now, the wine has the structure for aging, too. Best from 2026.

Hestan Vineyards 2018 Stephanie Red Napa Valley
$79.99 – $780.00California
February saw abundant rains, followed by lots of filtered light in spring and early summer. Both bud break and flowering occurred a bit late, but under ideal weather conditions, creating plentiful and even fruit set. Summer brought generous sun during the day and cooler marine influences, virtually uninterrupted by major heat spikes. The relatively mild summer followed by extended fall sunshine and moderate heat created near-ideal conditions for the fruit to accumulate flavor complexity with gradual increases in sugar levels. 31% Cabernet Franc 22% Petit Verdot, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Malbec and 8% Merlot withb27 Months French Oak.

A Best Buy Designation
This is a rather meaty, substantial wine for a fair price. Aromas of boysenberry, elderberry, roast beef and violet lead into a thick palate of cassis, more violet and pleasant mocha touches.

Several estate clones picked over 3 weeks, all batches destemmed and wild-fermented in open fermenters, hand-plunged up to five times a day, matured for 10 months in French oak (20% new). Light in color, but not in energy or drive. Complex spicy foresty notes intermingle with wild strawberry and red cherry aromatics across the bouquet and palate alike, fine, savory tannins, red fruits and spices in an articulate discussion with no single winner. A lovely Pinot.Buy this by the 6pk for $29.99 per bottle
