Stunning on every level, the 2018 Proprietary Red Wine reveals a dense purple hue as well as an incredible bouquet of crème de cassis, graphite, crushed stone, iron, violets, and tobacco. Reminding me of a hypothetical blend of Ducru Beaucaillou and Pontet Canet from a great, classical vintage (or a more elegant version of the 2013 for simplicity), it's medium to full-bodied, perfectly balanced, powerful yet elegant, and has a finish that won't quit. This is pure gold in Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s already drinkable yet will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and have 40 years of prime drinking. SPBX-3 -

An intense display of mocha, plum sauce, cloves, brown spice and earthen mineral tones wafts up from the 2013 Montefalco Sagrantino. This is a dark and concentrated effort that floods the palate in silky richness and ripe black fruits, as balsam herbs add lift and fine tannins saturate deeply toward the close. Tart cherries and hints of cocoa and tobacco linger through the dramatically long yet also youthfully structured finale. This power-packed Sagrantino is full of character, but it will require a few more years to fully flesh out. R3-7

Another remarkable effort is the 2017 Gigondas Clovis Saurel, which is a single vineyard cuvée made from 100% Grenache. Rock star notes of kirsch and mulled dark fruits are intermixed with lots of sappy flowers and incense aromas and flavors. It's deep and full-bodied, with a wonderful sense of elegance and purity and ultra-fine tannins. It's going to benefit from a year or three of bottle age and cruise in cool cellars for 10-15 years. Full-bodied, rich in fine-grained tannins and broad in a chocolaty, slightly jammy way. Drink now.
