On the palate, dusty chocolate, black cherry, blueberry compote, and slight vanilla bean are all present. This wine has a pleasurable mouthfeel, with minimal tannins, and is well structured. This is an easy drinking, a fruit-forward, and gratifying effort that should be enjoyed over the next five years. As with all Blackboard offerings, it is a great value and a wine you can stock up on without breaking the bank.

The wine is a result of a strict selection of the family’s oldest vineyards planted on hillsides and higher altitude sites that tend to have poorer soil and better drainage. Bodegas Muga 2022 Rioja Reserva

24 months in French (70%) and American (30%) oak barriques that are neutral. These barrels are produced from staves aged in the premises and coopered on the winery’s premises. Muga was the first winery in Spain to have an in-house cooperage. The wines are racked periodically throughout the ageing process to and fined with fresh egg whites (cracked by hand) before bottling. The wine is aged for a minimum of 12 months in bottle before release, but most vintages see further bottle ageing.

Muga Prado Enea 2019 Gran Reserva

The grapes for Prado Enea are always the last to be harvested. This is because of the careful selection of high-altitude plots with a fine quality, located in the north-west of the Rioja Alta, in the villages of Sajazarra, Cellorigo and Fonzaleche. The grapes ferment in oak vats with no addition of yeast or temperature control. The maceration period is for 16 days. This is followed by a minimum 36 months in French and American oak casks. At the end of the cask ageing the wine is lightly fined with egg whites before bottling and is then stored in our cellars for at least another 36 months, in order to complete the ageing process.
