il Poggione 2015 Brunello di Montalcino
$79.99Tuscany Italy
Wine Advocate 97 Rating
The Il Poggione 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows a darker and more concentrated appearance than many of its peers. The wine is beautifully abundant and fragrant in the most exuberant and expressive manner. You will recognize aromas of moist soil, tobacco and smoke. Candied cherry hovers over the entire bouquet. Fruit is sourced from older vines (all over 25 years old). Il Poggione occupies a special spot within the Montalcino appellation, and the area always produces slightly more concentrated and powerful wines. I find that to be particularly true in this gorgeous 2015 vintage. I am also very attracted to that almost dusty note of crushed mineral that rides long on the full-bodied finish. Il Poggione's Brunello is also distinguished by firm, youthful tannin that need a few more years to unwind. Luckily, there are quite a few bottles to go around, with some 200,000 made. R3-2 R43-4 -
Justin 2021 Justification
$49.99 – $240.00Paso Robles California
Vinous 91 Rating
Plum sauce and sage are accentuated by hints of ground clove and white pepper as the 2021 Justification slowly blossoms in the glass. This is seamless and silken with elegantly ripe red and black fruits that coast across a stream of tantalizing acidity. While gently tannic, the 2021 leaves the mouth watering for more as violet inner florals and hints of licorice resonate on.

Mercat Brut Cava
$14.99 – $144.00Catalonia Spain
Wine & Spirits 92 Rating
From vines planted on clay and limestone around the village of Sant Sadurni d’Anoia, this is a classic blend of 50 percent xarel.lo, 40 percent macabeo, with parellada making up the rest. It aged for 18 months on its lees and developed slight hints of flor, as if it were a bubbly interpretation of a Fino. It moves through the mouth in cool waves of flavor, the texture firm yet creamy. It’s a rich, layered sparkler to serve with suquet de peix, a classic Catalàn fish soup with clams.

$24.99 – $240.00Santa Maria Valley California
Jeb Dunnuck 90 Rating
The value-priced 2022 Pinot Noir Julia’s Vineyard comes from a site in the Santa Maria Valley and was brought up in 22% new French oak. Its translucent ruby hue is followed impressive notes of ripe cherry and strawberry fruits supported by pretty spice, flora, and leafy herb-like aromas and flavors. A wine that would hand many a Village Burgundy its ass, it’s well worth buying and drinking over the coming 3-5 years.

Aalto 2021 Red Ribera del Duero
$64.99 – $720.00Ribera del Duero Spain
Decanter 95 Rating
Aalto was established in 1999 by Mariano Garcia, winemaker for 30 years at Vega Sicilia. His philosophy was minimal intervention and maximum expression of the vineyard. For this wine, grapes are harvested from vines up to 80 years old, all organically farmed, from nine villages, low yields giving intensity and concentration. Seventeen months in French and American oak ensure a wine for the long haul. Beth Willard: Seductively fruity nose with flinty, stony character, even a touch of blood orange. Deep and concentrated with a lot of oak and acidity, but in balance. David Williams: Prominent oak, but high quality and integrated with the high-toned, ripe fruit. Savoury and engaging with satisfying richness and texture, with a long finish. Diana Rollan: Elegant and balanced with red berry notes of cranberry and raspberry, a touch of vanilla and dark chocolate. An appealing, polished style that keeps on giving: superb.

Aalto 2020 PS Tempranillo Ribera del Duero
$139.99Spain
James Suckling 96 Rating
Lots of depth here, with ripe blackberries and some nicely baked black cherries, roasted herbs, incense, dark spices, mussels and a balsamic tinge. An admirably fine dollop of tannins on the palate, which are immaculate and juicy, as they thoroughly dunk into the black fruit, melting into a persistent finish that lasts for over a minute. Very impressive. Drink or hold. R30-1 -
Poggio Scalette 2017 Alta Valle della Greve Il Carbonaione
$59.99 – $660.00Tuscany Italy
Wine Spectator 95 Rating
An alluring array of blackberry, black cherry and violet aromas introduces this supple, elegant red. Spice, mineral and tobacco elements emerge, along with firm, refined tannins, but this is all about the pure fruit. Shows terrific harmony and length. Sangiovese. Best from 2022 through 2040. SP46-6
