Tasting six Syrahs from five vintages
No Girls 2013 Syrah la Paciencia Vineyard Walla Walla Valley Washington State
Wine Advocate 93 Rating
The 2013 Syrah la Paciencia is another pretty, perfumed, medium to full-bodied effort that reminds me of a Cote Rotie from the southern, Cote Blonde end of the appellation. Crushed flowers, raspberries, violets, incense and dried herbs all emerge from this elegant, seamless Syrah that has fine tannin and a clean, focused finish. It will drink well for a decade.
Pax 2014 Griffins’s Lair Syrah Sonoma Coast
Antonio Galloni 93 Rating
The 2014 Syrah Griffin’s Lair Vineyard is another incredibly expressive, deep wine from Pax Mahle. Lavender, menthol, sage, iron, smoke, leather, licorice and intense, inky fruit confer tremendous richness and dimension to a Syrah endowed with tons of complexity and personality.
Stolpman 2017 Estate Grown Syrah Hilltops Ballard Canyon Santa Barbara County
Antonio Galloni 93 Rating
The 2017 Syrah Estate Grown is absolutely gorgeous. Fresh, floral and wonderfully perfumed, the Estate expresses all the best vintage had to offer. Sweet floral, spice and dried herbs are beautifully laced into a core of dark Syrah. Not only is the Estate a terrific example of the year, it also captures the interplay of rich fruit and more savory notes that is so typical of the best Ballard Canyon Syrahs. The 2017 is simply compelling. That’s all there is to it.
Shafer 2015 Relentless Syrah Napa Valley
Wine Advocate 95 Rating
Blended of 90% Syrah and 10% Petite Sirah, the deep purple-black colored 2015 Relentless has a total rock-star nose of flamboyant blackberry pie, plum preserves, mulberries and licorice scents with hints of Sichuan pepper, hoisin, Indian spices and smoked meats plus a waft of raspberry leaves. Very big, rich, full and decadently fruited in the mouth, the palate packs in black fruits and exotic spices layers with a firm, rounded tannin frame and just enough freshness to carry off the long, opulent finish.
Peay 2017 La Bruma Syrah Sonoma Coast
Wine Advocate 95 Rating
The medium to deep ruby-purple colored 2017 Estate Syrah La Bruma offers lovely aromatic layers, with pure scents of violets, crushed blueberries, blackberry candy and bright pops of perfumed red berries with nuances of blood orange, iron, licorice and lavender. The palate is medium to full-bodied with bursts of mint and bay over a fresh, crunchy fruit core with anchoring notes of iron. The frame is ripe, grainy and fresh, and it finishes long and nuanced.
Ex Post Facto 2019 Syrah Santa Barbara County
Wine Enthusiast 95 Rating
This is cool-climate Syrah on full amplification, courtesy of Greg Brewer. Aromas of cracked peppercorn, tar, graham cracker, raw lamb and elderberry show on the nose. The raw-meat flavors of the nuanced while bold palate are intense, and dusted with accents of pepper, bay leaf, rosemary and lavender.
