Aromas of blackberries, cherries, violets and bark with mahogany. It’s full-bodied and chewy with intense tannins that are layered and focused. The fruit is pure and purposeful, yet not over done. Wonderful strength and purity to this. Class is the word. Try it after 2024. R13-1

  • Castello dei Rampolla 2018 d’Alceo Toscana

    $184.99

    Tuscany Italy
    Vinous 99 Rating
The 2018 D’Alceo is a wild, exotic wine. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot come together in a wine that is sumptuous, layered and exceptionally beautiful. Inky blue/purplish fruit, sage, mint, lavender and chocolate are some of the many notes that take shape. The 2018 was fermented in cement then aged 12 months in a combination of 500L tonneaux and barriques. This really blooms with time. Castello dei Rampolla’s Sammarco and D’Alceo have been benchmarks for several decades. Both 2018s will take their place among the best wines ever made here. Maurizia di Napoli and her brother, Luca, craft wines of notable intensity and pedigree. Biodynamic farming and low intervention winemaking are the rule. Of the two flagship wines, D’Alceo is a bit more opulent, likely because the terraced vineyards are south and south-east facing, while Sammarco has a bit more tannic backbone and energy. Both are off the charts great. SP44-6

Enticing aromas of black cherry, black currant and violet are allied to flavors of iron, wet earth and spice in this red, which is loaded with fruit, vibrant acidity and well-mannered tannins. Shows terrific harmony now, yet possesses the structure to age. The long, mouthwatering finish extends the dark fruit and mineral elements. Best from 2021 through 2040. SP49-5

  • Castiel Estate 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain

    $189.99

    Napa Valley California
    Jeb Dunnuck 97 Rating
Coming from two sites on Howell Mountain, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a brilliant effort that readers should jump on if given the chance. Classic mountain aromatics of black fruits, tobacco, chocolate, and mineral-like nuances define the bouquet, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a layered mouthfeel, plenty of tannins, and a great finish. The balance is terrific, and this will benefit from just a few years of bottle age and should have 20-25 years of overall longevity. R37-1

Another masterpiece from the talents of Celia Welch, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain comes from a site on Howell Mountain and spent 20 months in new French oak. It’s a full-bodied, concentrated, powerful Mountain Cabernet revealing ample smoked black fruits, notes of graphite, tobacco, spicy wood, and bouquet garni, a dense, layered mid-palate, building tannins, and a gorgeous overall profile that will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age. It will unquestionably have two decades or more of prime drinking. SP23-5
