Sea Smoke 2022 Pinot Noir Southing
$119.99Santa Rita Hills California
A darling of the critics, Sea Smoke remains one of the Central Coast’s cult Pinot producers. Southing is sourced entirely from the Sea Smoke Estate Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills and sees 16 months in 28% new French oak barrels. After manual harvest, the grapes are entirely destemmed, encouraging a fruit forward delicateness. In recent years the winery has taken on a more Burgundian approach, minimizing extraction to allow the terroir to fully speak for itself. -
Saint Cosme 2017 Saint-Joseph
$49.99Northern Rhone Valley France
Wine Enthusiast 93 Rating
Layers of dried sage, bramble and green peppercorns lend a Sauvage appeal to plump, juicy black cherry and plum in this wine. It’s a full bodied but graceful Syrah fringed by fine tannins. The finish is delightfully floral, etched by violet and rose-petal perfume. Lovely already, the wine should drink well through 2027. SP36-5 -
San Polo 2015 Brunello di Montalcino
$59.99Tuscany Italy
Wine Enthusiast 95 Rating
Wild berry, camphor, tobacco and cocoa aromas fill the glass. Smooth, juicy and delicious, the full-bodied palate delivers ripe black cherry, raspberry compote and licorice while firm fine-grained tannins offer support. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Drink 2022–2027. R1-4 -
Brand Winery 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon
$249.99Napa Valley California
Wine Advocate 96+ Rating
Camphor, cedar, cassis and blackberries all appear on the nose of the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, a massively concentrated yet vibrant offering. It’s full-bodied and intense, velvety and rich, but it shows ample energy and thrust on the finish. If there’s a complaint, it’s that it’s too monolithic, but I’d chalk that up to its youth at this stage and expect it to gain complexity as it ages for two decades or more. R37-3 -
DuMol 2021 Isobel Charles Heintz Vineyard Chardonnay
$89.99Sonoma Coast California
Wine Advocate 98 Rating
The 2021 Chardonnay Isobel Charles Heintz Vineyard is the 20th bottling of a Heintz Vineyard Chardonnay at DuMOL. It was harvested September 25-27, matured in larger barrels and finished with six months in stainless steel. “There are very few better vintages of this,” winemaker Andy Smith exclaims during our tasting, and I have to agree. It’s bursting with scents of matchstick, chamomile, Greek yogurt and white peach, and over time, it unfurls unique spicy, herbal undertones. The palate is intensely concentrated, boasting expansive, dynamic flavors that segue from stone fruit to honey. Satiny and seamless, it has a tremendously long finish with mind-altering depth of flavor. Fans of Burgundy will love it for its flinty tones, and fans of California for its concentration and power. The floral wine has great intensity, dominated at this stage by the concentrated botrytis. It is powerful, rich, balancing acidity and sweetness. This of course is a great wine that will age, but it is almost ready now. Drink from 2027 and for many years. SPBX-3 -
Saxum Vineyards 2021 Hexe
$249.99Willow Creek District Paso Robles California
Jeb Dunnuck 98+ Rating
A clear step up over the 2020 of this cuvée, the 2021 Hexe is up there with the 2016 and 2018. Coming from a south-facing parcel in the James Berry Vineyard (there’s a kiss of G2 fruit) and based on 40% Grenache, 19% Graciano, and the rest Syrah, Mataro, and Petite Sirah, it sports a dense purple hue as well as awesome levels of red and black fruits, peppery herbs, sandalwood, loamy earth, and leather. I love its overall complexity, and it’s full-bodied, with a multi-dimensional mouthfeel, lots of structure, and a blockbuster of a finish. Hide bottles for 4-5 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 15-20 years. SP21-6 -
Saxum 2021 Cayucos Ridge Vineyard Red
$249.99San Luis Obispo
Jeb Dunnuck 97 Rating
A new wine that comes from a higher elevation site sitting just four miles off the Pacific Coast, the 2021 Cayucos Ridge Vineyard is all Syrah and has a singular style in its white pepper, fennel, game, and ripe blue fruit aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied and concentrated, with good ripeness, it just screams cool-climate California Syrah. SP21-4
