The 2020 Jersey Girl embodies our love for not only blends but also co-fermentations. At the core of the blend is one of our darkest clones of Syrah, clone 383, and a co-fermentation of Syrah, Viognier, and Graciano harvested on the same day. Several other Syrah-based co-fermentations were blended into the Jersey Girl to add mid-palate richness, with color and spicy and earthy notes from the Graciano and Tannat. Overall about 7% of Syrah was fermented as whole cluster to add more spice, floral notes, and complex fruit aromatics.

The 2020 Passing By is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petite Sirah and 2% Merlot. It has a deep ruby-purple color and scents of cassis, pencil shavings, violet, dried herbs and aniseed. The full-bodied palate is soft and juicy with loads of jammy fruit and new oak, with vanilla, brown sugar and nutmeg lingering on the finish. It’s a good effort in a challenging vintage and lovers of ripe, oaked reds can enjoy this over the next 3-5 years. R26-5

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Janzen Cloudy’s Vineyard comes from an estate vineyard located in the Dutch Henry Canyon, situated between the Switchback and Hourglass vineyards. Ripe currants, blueberries, leafy tobacco, iron, and chocolate all emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a focused, elegant mouthfeel, a terrific sense of freshness, and outstanding length. A tasting of the various constituent lieux-dits revealed that the Bachesson parcel had a peppery side and its characteristic rose scent, and an unmistakably granitic texture. The Chalaix lieu-dit was precise, fine, with no huge concentration but good balance. Lieu-dit Dardouille was looking promising, with good weight and length. The finished blend of the domaine’s St-Joseph is likely to be neat, precise and fresh, with a distinct mineral side, one to drink relatively young.
