Pouring a deeper ruby/magenta color, the 2022 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley is ripe and layered in the glass, with a generous, inviting, pure perfume of black cherries, cola, sweet baking spice, and forest floor. Medium-bodied, it has a lot of charm and a good, weightless feel, with fine tannins and a clean finish. I love that it never feels heavy but is 100% Russian River Valley in character. Drink it over the next 5-6 years. This is a lot of wine for the value. R5-6

Moving to the two Chardonnays, the 2018 Chardonnay Bien Nacido Vineyard Block UU sports a light gold color as well as a pure, crystalline bouquet of honeyed apple, pineapple, citrus blossom, spice, and white flower. It has a kiss of background oak, but it’s beautifully integrated, and the fruit is front and center. With good acidity, a balanced, layered texture, and a great finish, it’s already drinking nicely yet should keep for 7-8 years, if you’re so inclined.

Tsiakkas 2019 Koymanaapia Commandaria 500ml

The wine is made from two local grapes, the blue grape mavro blue and the white xynisteri. The grapes are grown on the southern slopes of the Troodos Mountains, about 30 kilometers north of Limassol, in poor volcanic soil. 14 villages are entitled to make Commandaria. The wine growers in Cyprus are lucky; there is no phylloxera on the island so no grafting on American rootstock is necessary.
The grapes are picked very ripe, even overripe, and thus very rich in sugar. They are then dried in the sun for one or two weeks to further increase the sugar content. Then, the grapes are pressed and the must undergoes a slow and long fermentation, often during 2-3 months. Sometimes the winemaker fortifies it with grape spirit, but it is not mandatory. The wine is aged in oak barrels for at least two years. The alcohol content of the finished wine is usually around 15%. According to the regulations, however, the alcohol may reach 20%. Commandaria wines have the sweetness, the richness and the caramel aromas in common. Some of them are almost overwhelming. To be enjoyed as an after dinner drink or with a chocolate dessert. Or whenever you feel the need for an energy boost.

White peach, honeyed flowers, and spice define the aromatics, and it’s nicely balanced, with a clean, crisp finish. It’s clearly an outstanding white that will keep for 2-4 years. Best after 2022

A deeper ruby/red color, the 2020 Barolo comes from the same vineyards as the No Name as well as Annunziata and offers more depth and ripeness, with aromas of black raspberries, candied cherries, preserved flowers, sweet herbs, and mossy earth. It has outstanding ripeness and purity and is long on the palate, with all its components coming together, delivering warmth, structure, and freshness. This is pretty serious wine, one of the best blended wines I’ve tasted in this vintage, and it’s going to be hard to beat. Buy it now. R21-6
