Reserved layers and depth slowly begin to emerge from the 2019 Grattamacco, so it is going to need time in cellar to open and show itself. As it opens in the glass, it reveals attractive dark mineral earth, kirsch, black pepper spice, and balsamic. It is concentrated and compact at this stage, with savory richness, and it displays full and balanced structure, ripe and present tannins, and notes of cassis, cedar, and pine resin. The Grattamacco 2024 Bolgheri Rosso is an organic blend of 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 10% Sangiovese and 5% Petit Verdot, fermented in stainless steel and matured for a brief six months in neutral barrique. The wine shows bright fruit at the forefront with notes of candied cherry and grenadine, followed by hints of spice and blue flower on the back end. Crafted to emphasize immediacy and primary fruit, this youthful Bolgheri Rosso stays fresh, direct and nicely focused throughout.

There’s so much character and structure. A new benchmark for this winery. More cabernet franc than in the past. Best yet? 65% cabernet sauvignon, 25% cabernet franc and 10% merlot. Try from 2025. The 2024 Il Bruciato shows an intense ruby red color. The nose presents the notes of red and black berry fruit which are characteristic of this vintage and capable of giving the wine an excellent concentration. Sweet spices and a hint of liquorice complete the bouquet. The palate is well structured, persistent, and highly pleasurable in its fruity finish and aftertaste.

Gurrieri 2024 Terre Siciliane Frappato

Frappato is a surprising grape. Sicilian wine is not supposed to be bright, crunchy, and zesty like this one. It is certainly not supposed to clock in at a cool 12.5% alcohol; not even Etna Rosso, grown at thousands of feet above sea level, does that. Yet here Frappato is, a juicy and delicious counterpoint to Nero d’Avola, and an increasingly popular alternative for grape growers and wine drinkers alike. The Gurrieri family grows their Frappato on the southern coast, dedicated to organic practices. This latest vintage offers a fresh blast of raspberry, strawberry, and smoked orange peel on the nose. The palate is crunchy and crisp, and tastes of the raspberries that fall off the bush when you try to pick them and a dusting of black pepper. As you work your way through the glass, light chalky tannins build up on the finish, something to chew on while you eat fresh pasta, fried calamari, or margarita pizza.

The workhorse of the estate, this vintage of the 2024 Greppicante celebrates the 20th harvest of Greppicante. A youthful ruby red color, it’s mostly Merlot, with about 20% each Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. While medium to full-bodied and elegant, it leans more vertically in this vintage, with notes that are balanced and really refreshing and floral. A finessed red with refined tannins, I appreciate the restraint this wine captures. Drink 2026-2036.
