Camphor, cedar, cassis and blackberries all appear on the nose of the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, a massively concentrated yet vibrant offering. It’s full-bodied and intense, velvety and rich, but it shows ample energy and thrust on the finish. If there’s a complaint, it’s that it’s too monolithic, but I’d chalk that up to its youth at this stage and expect it to gain complexity as it ages for two decades or more. R37-3 -

This powerful mountain red is impressively polished, imbued with the superfine and compact tannins so prevalent in the top Cabernet wines from 2021. They latch on to every corner of the palate, arresting it, but there’s so much acid freshness in the wine that their resolution is quick, revealing a host of enticing mocha and fresh cocoa nib notes. Aromas and flavors of violets, blackcurrants, spiced plums, and Bing cherry are laced with sweet tobacco, while fragrant, toasty cedarwood frames the entirety of this youthful and exuberant wine.

As I’ve written many times, this appellation release can stand toe to toe with any Chardonnay from Santa Barbara County.

As with all the Pinot Noirs from this talented winemaker, the 2023 Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills was not destemmed and was aged all in 100% neutral oak barrels. Medium ruby-hued, darker berries and redcurrants intermixed with rose, damp forest floor, and subtle spicy, meaty nuances all emerge from the glass. It’s remarkably pure and medium-bodied, with a pure, seamless, layered mouthfeel and ultra-fine tannins. This is classic Greg Brewer brilliance with Pinot Noir. Drink bottles any time over the coming decade. Drink 2025-2035.
