An admirably fine dollop of tannins on the palate, which are immaculate and juicy, as they thoroughly dunk into the black fruit, melting into a persistent finish that lasts for over a minute. The 2021 PS is 100% Tempranillo, primarily sourced from clay soils in La Horra and Aguilera, and was aged for up to 20 months in French barrels. Garnet-red in hue. Cherry and cola notes complement pine and dried flowers against a vanilla and cedar backdrop. It’s broad and creamy in the mouth, with a chalky core and a lasting oaky flavor. This tasting occurred just after bottling, but it promises to develop a more nuanced character in the medium term. -

There’s so much history in this bottle it would drain the ink of 100 pens to write it all down. Besides being one of Italy’s most beautiful wineries, with its backdrop against the Dolomites, it is also one of the oldest (2nd oldest, actually), founded in 1142 by Augustinian monks. Kerner, by contrast, is a regular arriviste, having been created by August Herald only in 1929. A cross between Riesling and the light red grape Schiava, it found a natural home in the cool alpine climate of the Alto Adige. The valleys here were carved by ancient glaciers, so the vineyards are steep, producing fresh, aromatic wines. Like this Kerner, which is layered with ripe apple, white peach, honeysuckle, and almonds. It’s rich, yet invigorating, and incredibly versatile at the table. 100% Kerner from gravelly marine soils planted at 600-750m in elevation. Vinified in stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeasts, then aged 6 months in stainless steel tanks.

The Sylvaner of the Novacella Abbey originates from vineyards located in the Bressanone basin, in the Isarco Valley, characterized by cool nights and good ventilation. It ferments and ages almost entirely in stainless steel, with a quarter of the mass carrying out both phases in acacia barrels. The aging duration is at least 6 months. Straw yellow in color with greenish hues, it has a beautiful fruity nose that revolves around hints of ripe pear and melon. On the palate it surprises in terms of robustness and structure, but at the same time for elegance. Perfect in combination with the first courses of South Tyrolean cuisine, especially with dumplings, but also with salads and asparagus mousse.

The flagship 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon was tasted out of bottle, and it might be the best yet. Deeply hued, it has an incredible array of black and blue fruits as well as leafy herbs, bouquet garni, graphite, and spicy oak that builds with time in the glass. Rich and full-bodied, it has a great mid-palate and incredible tannins. SPBX-3
