Alban Vineyards 2019 Syrah Lorraine Alban Estate Vineyard
$199.99Edna Valley California
Jeb Dunnuck 99 Rating
The 2019 Syrah Lorraine is ultra-classic and is about as textbook an example of this cuvée as I can recall. Black raspberries, cassis, spring flowers, and baking spices all flow to a full-bodied, round, velvety textured, utterly seamless Syrah with ripe tannins, a great mid-palate, and a gorgeous finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. It’s impossible to resist today (and I see no need to delay gratification), yet it will continue to deliver the goods any time over the coming 20-25 years. SP15-6 -

Alban Vineyards 2019 Syrah Reva Alban Estate
$109.99Edna Valley California
Jeb Dunnuck 98 Rating
Moving to the Syrahs, the 2019 Syrah Reva reveals a much cooler climate-like style in its blackberry, graphite, pepper, and bouquet garni-like nuances, and it picks up an almost Cornas-like game and white pepper character with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, ripe yet polished tannins, and a great finish. It reminds me slightly of the 2018, although with slightly less concentration. It will evolve for 20-25 years. SP14-5 -

Albert Bichot 2023 Chablis 1er Cru Les Beugnons
$74.99Burgundy France
Enjoyabilityfactor 95 Rating
“Les Beugnons” is a Premier Cru located on the left bank of the Serein River. The wines from this Climat may also bear the name “Vaillons” which is the name of the flag-bearing Climat they fall under. We have chosen to retain the original name due to the unique typicity of our plot. The very white soil and the extremely favorable exposure of our plot, in an area that is protected by the presence of numerous trees, yield mineral wines with ripe, rich aromas and flavors. “Les Beugnons” remains one of the rarities of Chablis. -

Albert Bichot 2023 Chablis Les Clos
$174.99Burgundy France
Enjoyabilityfactor 98 Rating
Quietly powerful, with subtle fruit flavors, a full body (for Chablis) and layers of fruit, minerals and toast that build on the palate and linger in the finish. Grown on a south-facing slope in clay-based but stony soil. 30% was barrel-fermented, and it shows an opulent, rich expression underlain by a minerally, saline character. Drinkable now but will develop much more complexity with time. From organically grown grapes. Best from 2029. Decanter Magazine 95 Rating. BX-6 -

Albert Bichot 2023 Mersault
$153.99Burgundy France
Enjoyabilityfactor 95 Rating
Delicate nose with scents of flowers and fruit, such as hawthorn and peach, underpinned by toasted notes. This rich, silky wine is structured and well balanced. It boasts remarkable length on the palate with a hint of sucrosity and lovely minerality. Taste this wine with finely prepared fish and seafood, or with roasted or stewed white meats and poultry. Albert Boxler 2023 Edelwicker Reserve
Price range: $31.99 through $168.00Alsace France
Enjoyabilityfactor 93 Rating
Boxler’s Edelzwicker Réserve is especially magical: it vividly captures the conviviality and flavors of harvest—of grapes as well as fleshy orchard fruit—and is also a match made in heaven for so much autumnal fare. Blending grand cru Riesling and Pinot Gris, which Jean says he “steals” from his noblest cuvées, as well as Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner, it bears a honeyed lusciousness, which offers a perfect foil for the bit of spice in my favorite carrot soup with coconut milk or butternut stew with harissa and chickpeas. Meanwhile, it has enough character and mouth-watering acidity to beautifully complement a mushroom or chicken pot pie, pan-seared pork chops with apples and miso, or your favorite take-out ramen or chow mein.
