Aia Vecchia 2021 Sor Ugo Bolgheri Superiore
$42.99 – $216.00Tuscany Italy
James Suckling 92 Rating
A lot of helichrysums and ripe, almost under-spirit cherries. Lifted acidity with velvety tannins, full body and a more austere finish due to the oak. Yet, it remains balanced.

The 2016 Bolgheri Superiore Sor Ugo offers thickly extracted aromas of blackberry preserves and cherry confit with smoke, tar and sweet spice. This is a full-bodied red (with 15% alcohol) that wraps thickly over the palate, showing rich density and concentration along the way. Campfire ash and hickory smoke appear on the close. Alban Vineyards 2019 Syrah Lorraine Alban Estate Vineyard
$199.99Edna Valley California
Jeb Dunnuck 99 Rating
The 2019 Syrah Lorraine is ultra-classic and is about as textbook an example of this cuvĂ©e as I can recall. Black raspberries, cassis, spring flowers, and baking spices all flow to a full-bodied, round, velvety textured, utterly seamless Syrah with ripe tannins, a great mid-palate, and a gorgeous finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. It’s impossible to resist today (and I see no need to delay gratification), yet it will continue to deliver the goods any time over the coming 20-25 years. SP15-6 -
Alban Vineyards 2019 Syrah Reva Alban Estate
$109.99Edna Valley California
Jeb Dunnuck 98 Rating
Moving to the Syrahs, the 2019 Syrah Reva reveals a much cooler climate-like style in its blackberry, graphite, pepper, and bouquet garni-like nuances, and it picks up an almost Cornas-like game and white pepper character with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, ripe yet polished tannins, and a great finish. It reminds me slightly of the 2018, although with slightly less concentration. It will evolve for 20-25 years. SP14-5 -
